NFL Preseason: Top moments from Saturday's 10-game lineup

Updated Aug. 22, 2021 1:35 a.m. ET

Saturday in the NFL started in the Midwest and will end out West.

Ten preseason games were on the schedule, with the Buffalo Bills dominating Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears on the road to open the day, followed by fellow rookie QB Zach Wilson and the New York Jets defeating the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in front of nearly 74,000 fans.

To close out the night, the Las Vegas Raiders battled it out on the road against the Los Angeles Rams, while the Seattle Seahawks fell to the Denver Broncos at home.

Here are the top moments from Saturday's preseason slate.

Denver Broncos 30, Seattle Seahawks 3

Shaky ground

Things started off rough for Seattle, as Alex McGough's short pass intended for Cody Thompson was intercepted by the Broncos' Justin Simmons at midfield.

Full speed ahead

That turnover set up a TD from Teddy Bridgewater to K.J. Hamler to put the Broncos up early.

At the top of the second quarter, the Broncos fumbled into the end zone, but it was recovered by guard Dalton Risner, good for Denver's second TD of the night.

To close out the first half, Brandon McManus hit a 39-yard field goal to put the Broncos up 17-0, and he started the second half the same way, this time with a 52-yarder to extend Denver's lead to 20-0.

Playing catch-up

The Seahawks got on the board midway through the third, thanks to a FG from Jason Myers to avoid the shutout, and Seattle entered the fourth quarter trailing by 17 points.

Sealing the deal

McManus nailed this second FG of the night on the first play of the fourth, followed by an 11-yard TD pass from Brett Rypien to Shaun Beyer to extend the Broncos' lead to 30-3, and things ended there.

Las Vegas Raiders 17, Los Angeles Rams 16

Leaping for joy

Trey Ragas' stellar 1-yard rush put the Raiders on the board first, taking an early lead over the Rams.

In the third quarter, Perkins' deep pass deep up the middle meant for Tutu Atwell was intercepted by DB Nate Hobbs, which set up a FG from the Raiders to knot things up at 10 heading into the fourth.

Closing time

At the top of the fourth, Brontae Harris came up with a huge turnover for the Rams that brought SoFi Stadium to its feet.

But it was followed by a picturesque TD catch from Marcell Ateman as the minutes ticked down.

With 15 seconds left in regulation, the Rams punched in a TD to make it a one-point game, but after a failed two-point conversation attempt, the Raiders ran away with the win.

Houston Texans 20, Dallas Cowboys 14

New Kid on the Block

Mark Ingram punched in a TD for the Texans at the top of the first frame, giving Houston an early 7-0 lead over the Cowboys, who had a quiet, scoreless opening quarter.

The Texans came out strong in the second half, and Lonnie Johnson Jr.'s 53-yard interception return knotted things up once again.

Ka'imi Fairbairn made two FGs in the top of the fourth to put the Texans back in and keep the lead.

Indianapolis Colts 12, Minnesota Vikings 10

On the move

Rodrigo Blankenship’s 47-yard FG put the Colts on the board first Saturday, but the Vikings weren’t far behind.

Minnesota linebacker Troy Dye intercepted Sam Ehlinger’s pass intended for Parris Campbell and returned it 33 yards for a Vikings TD to close out the first quarter.

Tennessee Titans 34, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3

Can't stop, won't stop

The Titans kept the momentum going in the third quarter, as safety Briean Boddy-Calhoun turned a fumble recovery into a wild 42-yard TD run, followed by a TD from rookie Dez Fitzpatrick to put Tennessee up 27-3 headed into the fourth.

The Titans got another scoring boost late in the game from Mason Kinsey, who started off the fourth quarter with Tennessee's final score of the night.

Pittsburgh Steelers 26, Detroit Lions 20

Big Ben

Opening things up for the Steelers was Ben Roethlisberger, who connected with Diontae Johnson on a dazzling 43-yard pass that had "Terrible Towels" flying.

Soarin', Freieing

Six plays later, Roethlisberger hit rookie Pat Freiermuth, who put Pittsburgh on the board first.

A few minutes later, Roethlisberger found Freiermuth again, this time on an 8-yard pass for the Steelers' second TD on the day.

Fourth quarter surge

The second and third quarters were all Chris Boswell, who made three FGs to extended Pittsburgh's lead to 23-0 heading into the fourth quarter, where the Lions saw its first score of the night, thanks to safety Godwin Igwebuike's 7-yard rush on the first play of the frame.

After Boswell made his fourth FG of the night, the Lions made a run late in the quarter after a successful onside kick to the tune of back-to-back TDs from Javon McKinley and Craig Reynolds to close it out.

Baltimore Ravens 20, Carolina Panthers 3

Rocky start

The Ravens got off on the wrong foot on Saturday. On just the fourth play of the game, Tyler Huntley’s pass intended for Devin Duvernay was intercepted by Panthers linebacker Haason Reddick.

And for the second time today, a helmet went flying when Brian Burns took down Huntley on a failed trick play from Baltimore.

Redemption

The Panthers were the first on the board, as Joey Slye redeemed himself with a 41-yard FG at the bottom of the second quarter, to which Baltimore's Justin Tucker responded with a score of his own to knot things up at 3 at the half.

The Ravens were the first to strike in the second half, when Nate McCrary ran it in for Baltimore, which found itself up 10-3 midway through the third.

Then, Jake Verity hit a 44-yarder for Baltimore at the top of the fourth, followed by a 20-yard rush from Ty'Son Williams to put the Ravens up 20-3 midway through the frame, which turned out to be the final points of the night.

The Ravens have now won 19 consecutive preseason games – the longest streak since the Lombardi-era Packers (1959-62).

Atlanta Falcons 37, Miami Dolphins 17

Hot start

A.J. McCarron began the game at QB for the Falcons, but it was Younghoe Koo who got the first points on the board for Atlanta, nailing a 53-yard FG to get things going in the first quarter.

Returning the favor

Miami was quick to strike back. Midway through the first, running back Myles Gaskin punched in a TD for the Dolphins, putting Miami ahead 7-3 to close out the quarter.

Another one

The Dolphins kept that same momentum headed into the second frame, where Gaskin scored his second TD on the day, this time on an 8-yard pass from QB Tua Tagovailoa that extended Miami's lead to 14-3 going into halftime.

Lights out

It was more of the same from Miami in the second half.

Malcolm Brown punched in a TD for the Dolphins early in the third quarter, and less than two minutes later, Miami's defense forced a safety when Sam Eguavoen sacked Atlanta's Feleipe Franks, good for his fourth sack of the game. Heading into the fourth quarter, Miami led 23-3.

Then, Jacoby Brissett found Robert Foster for six, and Miami found itself up 30-3 heading into the final quarter.

Fashionably late

The Falcons finally got their first TD of the night on a 1-yard rush from D'Onta Foreman midway through the fourth.

The Dolphins responded with six of their own, thanks to Kirk Merritt, but Atlanta didn't give up, and Caleb Huntley scored for the Falcons on a 30-yard run to close out the night, trailing Miami by 20 points.

New York Jets 23, Green Bay Packers 14

Zach's turn

With one rookie gunslinger finished, another stepped to the plate in the form of New York's Wilson.

The BYU product started things off with a pass deep up the middle to Corey Davis, good for 24 yards to convert on third down. Unable to find the end zone on the first possession, the Jets got a scoring boost from Matt Ammendola's 54-yard FG to give New York an early 3-0 lead.

Striking back

The Packers were without both Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love in this game. Instead, Kurt Benkert was at the helm for Green Bay, who didn't waste any time getting on the board.

Midway through the first quarter, rookie Kylin Hill ran 12 yards for a TD, and Green Bay took a 7-3 lead.

To close out the first frame, Wilson continued to put on a show, connecting with Davis once again, this time for 27 yards.

All gas, no brakes

Wilson continued to let it fly to start the second quarter, finding Tyler Kroft, who punched in the Jet's first TD of the game – and Wilson's first NFL score.

The Jets lead the Packers 10-7 at the top of the second.

The Packers answered with a 5-yard TD pass from Benkert to Jace Sternberger, putting Green Bay up 14-10 as the second quarter wound down.

Seeing double

But before the break, the Jets struck once again, as Wilson connected with Kroft for their second TD on the day. The 22-year-old QB went 9-for-11 for 128 passing yards and two TDs in the first half.

The Jets led the Packers 17-14 at the half, and Mike White took over at QB.

Back-to-back

After a fumble from Green Bay to open the third, the Jets charged down the field to set up another FG attempt from Ammendola, who nailed a 46-yarder to make it a six-point game early in the second half.

Then, midway through the quarter at the 6:02 mark, Ammendola hit another FG, this time from 30 yards out, putting the Jets up 23-14 to close out the third and the game.

Buffalo Bills 41, Chicago Bears 15

Pitch and run

Devin Singletary took this pitch from Mitch Trubisky and ran it 14 yards to the house on fourth-and-1.

On the Bills' opening drive, Trubisky completed 5-of-7 passes for 53 yards in leading Buffalo into the red zone.

Two drives …

… two touchdowns.

The Bills, even without their rising superstar QB Josh Allen, were clicking on all cylinders in their second preseason game.

Trubisky is 12-for-17 passing for 112 yards and has added a TD to his stat-line in the first quarter, finding Jake Kumerow for a 4-yard score to give Buffalo a 13-0 lead with three minutes to go in the opening frame.

Outta hand

Preseason is not the real season, but Buffalo looks like the real deal.

Another short score from Gilliam helped catapult the Bills to a 28-0 lead with more than eight minutes to go in the first half.

Dalton bounces back

As Andy Dalton took the field for his fifth drive, Bears fans booed, presumably hoping to see rookie Fields under center. Dalton quickly turned those jeers to cheers, connecting with Rodney Adams for a 73-yard score.

Buffalo held a 28-6 lead after Chicago's extra-point was blocked. The Bills tacked on two more FGs to take a 34-6 lead entering halftime.

Fields on the field

After Dalton played the entire first half for Chicago, the first snap of the second half belonged to the rookie Fields – and the crowd at Soldier Field was all about it.

On his first drive, Fields was 2-for-4 passing for 10 yards.

Special team-mate

After that first Fields drive, Buffalo stole the narrative once again, thanks to Marquez Stevenson, who returned Chicago's punt 79 yards to the house.

And just like that, Fields was back on the field, now trailing 41-6.

Fancy feet

The Ohio State product brought fans back to their feet when he showed off some fancy footwork on a fourth-and-3, scrambling for 16 yards before finding Jesse James for a 32-yard reception on the next play to put the Bears deep in Bills' territory.

Chicago would turn the ball over on downs to conclude that series, but the Bears got another chance at the top of the fourth.

On the first play of the quarter, Fields took a gnarly helmet-to-helmet hit from Bills linebacker Andre Smith, which knocked Fields’ helmet and headband off as he slammed into the turf. Smith was flagged for roughing the passer.

But on the very next play and less than 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, Khalil Herbert ran it in for a Bears TD.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Fields was seen limping on the field after taking another huge hit, this time from "Boogie" Basham, but he pushed through the pain to finish the game. There was plenty of blame to go around for those hits, with some placing blame on Fields himself for not recognizing when to get rid of the ball.

With 5:29 left in regulation, Brian Johnson nailed a 54 -yard FG to make the score 41-15, and things ended there.
