Sources: Champions Tour will start three-event playoff series in 2016
The FedEx Cup playoffs are in their ninth year and, by all accounts, have made the PGA Tour’s fall season compelling and relevant. Could a playoff system for the Champions Tour create similar interest?
On Thursday, the parent PGA Tour will introduce a three-event Champions Tour playoff system, sources told Golfweek. The series likely will debut in the Savannah, Ga., area before moving to the Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course in Richmond for the second event. The Dominion Charity Classic, a 54-man, 54-hole event, will feature a $2 million purse and be played Nov. 4-6, sources said. Dominion Resources, a utility company, will title-sponsor the tournament.
From the 54 players in Richmond, a reduced number will advance to the Charles Schwab Cup finals, similar to the four-tournament progression in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup series. Details of the Champions Tour’s playoffs will be announced at the Charles Schwab Championship in early November.
The Tour looked at other Richmond-area courses, including Hermitage Country Club, which hosted an event from 1983 to 1990 on what was then the Senior Tour, and newly renovated Independence Golf Club before choosing Country Club of Virginia.
