Bossy reunited with famous puck following assist from eBay
Hall of Famer Mike Bossy received an assist in retrieving the lost puck that commemorated his accomplishment for scoring 50 goals in 50 games during the 1980-81 season.
Gavin Maloof, a former co-owner of the NBA's Sacramento Kings, purchased the elusive puck for $6,850 on eBay. Maloof then invited the former New York Islanders star forward to Las Vegas for a steak dinner before reuniting him with a special piece of history.
"I said, 'We need to get this puck. It means a lot to Mr. Bossy,'" Maloof told TMZ Sports. "Fifty goals in 50 games. Only a handful of people have ever done that. I needed to buy this puck. I don't care how much it costs."
Bossy initially lost possession of the puck in 1988 after his daughter gave it as a gift to her swimming instructor, Jake Jacobson. Maloof told TMZ that the hockey star admitted his daughter is "finally off the hook" for handing it over to Jacobson, a New Jersey resident and admitted Islanders fan who claims he tried to return it to Bossy years ago.
A four-time Stanley Cup champion, Bossy reached the 50-goal plateau in his 50th game when he scored twice against the Quebec Nordiques on Jan. 24, 1981. He matched Maurice Richard (1944-45) by accomplishing the feat, before Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull also joined membership in the exclusive club.
Bossy, who was the 1982 Conn Smythe Trophy winner, collected 573 goals and 553 assists in 752 career games with the Islanders.
