Emotional Carcillo advocates for mental health following death of Steve Montador

Published Apr. 23, 2015 12:36 p.m. ET

The entire NHL was shocked by the premature death of former player (and former Sabre) Steve Montador. There was the initial burst of news and memorial ceremonies before the talk about Montador died down. But fans often only see players through the lens of a game, and that makes it difficult to understand how players are truly coping with Montador's death.

Daniel Carcillo showed the world exactly how he was affected by Montador's death via a story Carcillo wrote for The Players' Tribune and the following video.

Carcillo's candid and emotional words on mental health and the lacking amount of support by the NHL reveal some hard truths that this league, its players and its fans need to confront.

"I think if [Montador] had the right help, he would still be here with us," Carcillo said at the end of the video.
