Bama accepted the challenge and withstood a record performance from Johnny Manziel. Yes, "revenge" is sweet for the Tide.
2. Stanford Cardinal 2-0 --
A long trip East resulted in a win at Army for the Cardinal. They are home this week to open the Pac-12 season against fellow unbeaten Arizona State.
3. Oregon Ducks 3-0 --
The Ducks spotted Tennessee an early seven points before overwhelming the Vols 59-14. They’re off this week before Cal visits Eugene.
4. Ohio State Buckeyes 3-0 +1
I just saw the Buckeyes in person, and they are impressive. Backup QB Kenny Guiton led a sensational team effort in a big win against Cal.
5. Clemson Tigers 2-0 -1
The Tigers took the weekend off and now face a dangerous North Carolina State team on the road this Thursday.
6. Oklahoma State Cowboys 3-0 +1
The Cowboys ignored the distractions from last week’s report alleging widespread violations in the last decade and swamped an outclassed Lamar team. They have a week off before a tough trip to West Virginia.
7. Louisville Cardinals 3-0 +1
Kentucky challenged the Cardinals early, but the "Ville" was simply too talented, holding UK to 0-13 on third downs.
8. LSU Tigers 3-0 +2
The Tigers outgained Kent State 571-248 and won by 32 points. The Bengal Tigers open SEC play on Saturday with a rejuvenated Auburn team.
9. Texas A&M Aggies 2-1 -3
A tough, battling loss at home to Alabama, but this team is too talented to dismiss this early.
10. Georgia Bulldogs 1-1 +1
The Bulldogs had a respite this past weekend, which was well deserved after playing Clemson and South Carolina in their first two games.
11. UCLA Bruins 2-0 +3
The Bruins had the most impressive performance of the weekend in coming from down 21-3 at Nebraska and scoring the next 38 points straight.
12. South Carolina Gamecocks 2-1 --
It fended off a tough Vanderbilt team and now heads to UCF this week. Be careful, Gamecocks.
13. Oklahoma Sooners 3-0 --
Good things come to those with patience. QB Blake Bell finally got the starting nod and threw for 413 yards and four TD's. The Sooners have a week off before heading to South Bend.
14. Michigan Wolverines 3-0 -5
How about that strong, collective sigh of relief in the Big House as the Wolverines survived Akron?! Get ready for a tough week of practice, fellas.
15. Florida State Seminoles 2-0 --
This team may be under-ranked by moi. Frosh QB Jameis Winston has seven TD passes and five incompletions in two games.
16. Miami (FL) Hurricanes 2-0 --
The Canes don't leave the state for a game until Oct. 17. It’s a name-your-score game against Savannah State this weekend.
17. Northwestern Wildcats 3-0 +1
Coach Pat Fitzgerald's Wildcats are marking time until Big Ten play begins. They will be a factor in the conference race.
18. Washington Huskies 2-0 +1
Excellent win over Illinois at Soldier Field, and yes, QB Keith Price is BACK. RB Bishop Sankey needs more publicity.
19. Arizona State Sun Devils 2-0 +3
A controversial ending in their HUGE win over Wisconsin, but the Sun Devils will take it and ride the momentum to take on No. 2 Stanford (No. 5 in latest AP poll) on Saturday.
20. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2-1 --
When Notre Dame visits, it gets everyone's best shot. A good road win for the Irish at Purdue, but they will have to play better against Michigan State this weekend.
21. Florida Gators 1-1 --
The Gators welcome Tennessee this Saturday and have won eight straight over the Vols.
22. Mississippi Rebels 3-0 +2
This team's confidence and stature continues to grow right in front of us. The win at Texas could easily propel this team to really challenge Alabama in two weeks.
23. Baylor Bears 2-0 --
Bears QB Bryce Petty leads an offense averaging 737 yards per game, best in the nation. A tough one with Louisiana-Monroe looms this week.
24. UCF Knights 3-0 --
People may not know much about this team from Orlando, but in the Knights’ short history, they own wins at Alabama and, after this past Saturday, Penn State.
25. Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-0 --
Rookie head coach Kliff Kingsbury is getting the attention as the "GQ" coach, but his freshman walk-on QB Baker Mayfield is his best accessory.
