Hughes suffered a complete tear of the medial collateral ligament and a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament when he collapsed to the mat after being struck by an Alves knee in the second round of their fight. Surgery may not be required, but Hughes will seek a second opinion on the injury this week.
"They really think that the PCL will repair itself and that MCL has a chance of repairing itself," Hughes wrote on the Web site. "So we're going to hold off on surgery right now."
Hughes, who has hinted at retirement, was expected to fight at least once more against archrival Matt Serra in the UFC. Whether or not his latest injury jeopardizes that bout remains to be seen. The two were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 79 in December, but a back injury forced Serra to withdraw.
A certain Hall of Famer, Hughes (42-7, 15-5 UFC) has lost three of his last four fights, including two straight. He owns high-profile victories against reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, current UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn, one-time UFC lightweight titleholder Sean Sherk, former Icon Sport middleweight champion Frank Trigg (twice) and Japanese superstar Hayato "Mach" Sakurai.
