HARTFORD -- Point guard has been a position in question throughout the preseason for the UConn women's basketball team. It took less than five minutes in Monday's exhibition finale for it to become a bigger question mark.

Junior Lorin Dixon suffered a strained left hamstring driving to the basket with 15:42 left in the first half of a 98-68 victory over Vanguard before 7,352 at the XL Center. She had started both exhibition games, and was slated to start Saturday's season opener against Northeastern.

Junior All-American Maya Moore scored a game-high 33 points (12-of-21 FG) and also added eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks to lead UConn.

Dixon, who laid face down on the court for a few minutes following the play, was immediately escorted to the locker room by team trainer Rosemary Ragle and team doctor Tom Trojian. Dixon returned to the bench with 12:41 left in the half.

Dixon did not return to the game and she is listed as questionable to play against Northeastern. Sophomore Caroline Doty replaced Dixon in the lineup. Huskies coach Geno Auriemma also used sophomore Tiffany Hayes at the point.

Hayes started the second half at the position.

Tina Charles finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for UConn. Hayes finished with 15 points (5-of-10 FG).

Doty added 11 points and five assists. Freshman Kelly Faris had nine points, three rebounds, five assists and three blocks in 278 minutes.

Kalana Greene (four rebounds, two assists, two steals) was scoreless (0-of-3 FG) in 15 minutes.

The Huskies, who held Vanguard scoreless for the first 5:03 of the game, held leads of 12-0 and 25-5 in the first eight minutes. They led 53-35 at halftime.

UConn was 15-of-34 from 3-point range. Led by four 3-pointers by Moore, six different players made at least one.

Rachel Copeland led Vanguard, who is ranked No. 2 in the preseason NAIA Division I poll, with 19 points.??
