Florida coach Billy Donovan has added ex-Georgetown big man Vernon Macklin.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound sophomore was a former high school star and McDonald's All-American that didn't log a ton of playing time while backing up Roy Hibbert at Georgetown.

Macklin averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game. He scored a season-high 18 points against St. John's in late January.

"It's a great decision because it gives Vernon a chance to sit out and work on some things," said Macklin's former prep school coach, Kevin Keatts, of Hargrave Military Academy. "He's learned a lot in the last two years under John (Thompson III), but going to Florida will give him a chance to re-charge his battery a little bit."

Macklin made the decision during a Friday visit to Gainesville.

Even though Hibbert graduated, Macklin saw the writing on the wall with the fact that the consensus No. 1 freshman in the country, Greg Monroe, is set to arrive on campus soon.

The ultra-athletic Macklin, who is expected to arrive in Gainesville soon for summer school classes, could fit into Donovan's up-tempo system. He will have to sit out this season before becoming eligible in the 2009-10 campaign.

Good lord....it's amazing how a backup transferring from one school to another can spur the who's college is best debate. We're sending another backup Florida's way today. Rivers said he's transferring to UF too.

Good luck to all next year!

shootingbandit:
I normally am not a jerk, ragging other schools, but there were some nasty posts on here earlier against UF, so here I am, acting like a jerk. I grew up in Florida, though, and my family has always been Gators since there was a UF. Personally, we usually went to the Gulf...the Atlantic was too rough. Ft. Myers was nice, but a bit far from G'ville. Take care and Go Gators!

To be totally fair, US News and World Report, America's Best Colleges 2008 ranks Georgetown University at #23 and The University of Florida at #49. See, all that G'town tradition is worth 26 spots in the world of academia. Still, not bad for a dumb southern university, lacking all that grand tradition of the Hoyas.

AI drove Big John into retirement and destroyed Georgetown's program until little John came and started re-building it. This kid is smart to go to Fl. where Billy D. will bring out the best in him and we really need the frontcourt help. It looks like JT, the 3rd will be a good coach for the Hoyas but they better treat him right or he'll be going off to the highest bidder. I think most of these negative posters are jealous. Let's see, I can leave U of F and be on a beach on either coast in two hours. It's really nice down here.

Having graduated from The University of Florida, I decided to research the sports programs at Georgetown University on Wikipedia. Here are my humble findings:

Basketball: men's final four 5 times, 1 national championship...as personal commentary, I might suggest that perhaps under the future astute coaching of John Thompson XX the Hoyas might win another national championship. Only 17 more John Thompsons to go, G'town.

Rowing: They are competitive.
Rugby: They are competitive.
Croquet: They are competitive.
Sailing: They finished #1 in 2005...good for them.
Football: In 1941, they lost a bowl game to the SEC, Mississippi State, 14-7. A few years later they quit playing altogether. But watch out, America, have you heard the news: the Hoyas resumed playing in 1978. The crystal trophy is anxiously awaiting its rightful place at G'town. And for all you SEC haters, maybe we can start scheduling the Hoyas for one of our OOC games. Are you listening, my beloved Gators?

By the way, anyone interested in languages can read the section entitled "What is a Hoya?" Incredible, what it all means. Very deep and interesting, filled with a history no other university in America can dare approach. Wouldn't you like to be a Hoya, too, fellow Americans? Gee, that wasn't fair...let's invite the world to be Hoyas.

kevbow79:
From the tone of your post, you appear to be hurt deeply by Billy Donovan choosing not to stay with the Magic. Try to get over it and quit all your crying. Besides, it turned out ok for you, what with Orlando making the playoffs and all. Besides the Gators, let's all discuss the rich tradition that is the Orlando Magic. Incredible history. Truly amazing. You must be proud.

Laker-Dynasty:
Please enlighten us on how many national championships G'town has won? Inquiring minds want to know, and obviously you have all the answers. Please answer with the elegance of your previous post. We all admire your use of the King's English that only G'town can provide.

Fans must really be bitter in G'town. It wasn't like the kid was helping you anyway. Could it be that it has been a long time since you have been more than barely relevant in the sports world? As for the incredible education G'town provides to the rich and brilliant, your posts here show ample indication of your superiority. Must be awesome these days to be a Hoya. Don't they make cheap Mexican cuisine?

P'dinNY:
I couldn't agree more. Good post.

Ok, Good for the Gators, a big man will help. GTown=1 natl champ, FLORIDA=2 Natl champs. Florida has more, thus they win!!!!

What sucks is the NCAA still thinks it is in the slave business and makes these kids sit out a year. If coaches can pick up and move on without any hesitation, then why should this Macklin be punished for leaving for a better opportunity to play? Obviously Georgetown has released him from his scholarship, so who gets hurt here? The player of course.

Excellent decision by Macklin. The Gators can and certainly will use him year after next. He will be hungry, more mature and will have watched the Donavan System for a year. Please stop bashing UF you people from Georgetown who are not happy about this. I understand why you are not happy, but please. YES, GT has had a GREAT tradition in the PAST. Let's converse about the last five to seven years and start to realize that the Gators have a heck of a coach and are starting a tradition of their own. How many times has GTown won 2 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS in a ROW?? Make that 3 with football. WTF.

Poor decision by Macklin. If Billy Donovan is still the coach in 2 years when he becomes eligible I'm sure he will be back to square 1. Donovan reloads every year at Florida, who's to say he won't bring in the next big F/C All American. Macklin should have gone to a program where he would have made an immediate impact/go to guy down in the low post. I wish him the best of luck, but wouldn't count him being a lottery pick.

Lising Speights means Kadji would be the lone power player for the Gators next year. Nothing against any of our other forwards, they're great kids who play hard, stay out of trouble, and fit in well with Donovan's system. But I think Billy sees the difference between the team that lost in the Finals against the Spartans and the Gator teams that won in '06-'07. You need people who can *at the very least* match up inside. marresse will play in the league, if not this year, then next. But his conditioning and tendency to commit fouls became a huge factor for us this past year in large part due to the fact that we didn't have anyone else who could turn teams away from the basket.

This may not look like much on paper given macklin's stats, but for our program this can become a REALLY nice addition.

Well break out the bench pad because I don't see him getting any more playing time at Florida than Georgetown. Donovan is bringing in All Americans for rebuilding, with two years of eligiblity left he needed to go where he can step in and contribute immediately.

Good to see a big man coming to florida.

Gator, I kind of have to agree with everyone else with the whole tradition thing. Lately I would say UF has the edge, but don't forget about guys like Ewing and Mutombo in the 80s. But, Georgetown did disappear for a while too during the 90s, but they still have a better tradition right now.

Wow, after reading a lot of the shiite on this page, seems to be an awful lot of disgruntled G-town fans. The kid decided to leave, big f'n deal, get over it. As for Georgetowns tradition, that left when "Big" John Thompson retired. Other than a couple of years here lately, they haven't done squat since Ewing and Mutumbo. Florida has been the better program over the last 13 years, playing for 3 NC and winning 2.
Maybe when G-town starts living up to its new found hype they will grow their tradition again, but until then shut your manpleasers!!
And no dan****sss ebonics isn't offered at UF so he won't be able to take that course. But I believe he can take the course at whatever sorry institute you are a part of!!
As for kevbow, you seem to be the typical Big-10 fan, have to come on to a post concerning the SEC or one of it's schools and run your meatholster, tell you what have one of your school's teams win something of relevance some time soon, and then maybe you can have the right to talk..until then how bout shuttin the @#$% up!!!
Gooooooooo GATORS!!!

can he major in ebonics at florida?

I guess it was a stretch for macklin to try and work hard and challenge monroe for the job. A former all-american wants to transfer because they're signing monroe is ridiculous. He backed up hibbert (1st round pick) for two years and now he wants to leave. Since it's clear that he staying in school for 4 years, why not just stay at GTown since it's a more prestigious institution academically and historically has a better basketball program than florida. By the way, the best player to come out of Florida is Vernon Maxwell. No disrespect to the repeat team but individually thhose guys were not that good. brewer has the most potential but right now horford has the most hype. horford ia a poor man's Horace Grant. He wish he could be that good.. Macklin should have stuck it out but like many kids today, he could not handle adversity because he was so used to to getting what he wanted most of the time. So he did what these types do best, move on to another situation that they think is better. The sad part that they don't realize is that you can't keep running from adversity.

gators41ohiostate14remember,
Now you are the TYPICAL Gator (SEC) fan. First off Florida IS NOT a better academic school then Georgetown. Second off yes Florida has been good the last few years but in NO WAY do they have the rich basketball tradition that GEORGETOWN does. Just another stupid comment by a dumb Florida Redneck's fan I mean Gaytor's fan I mean Gators fan. GTFO !
