SCOUTING THE NEWCOMERS: At 6-4, wing Patrick Richard could challenge Kapelan if he falters. Richard averaged 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds a game in high school. As he is a freshman, and given his athleticism, he likely is an heir to John Pichon. The most immediate impact will come from someone who does not have the same scoring punch -- F Jamarcus Little. At 6-8, 255 pounds, Little could combine with Penn for a Bruise Brothers routine inside. There might not be much in the way of scoring down low, but opponents will get worn out inside as well. If Little isn't up to the task, 6-9 Elbryan Neal comes in as a junior college transfer. Neal was tutored by big nasty, former Arkansas star Corliss Williamson.

KEY EARLY-SEASON GAMES: McNeese has the name games in Tulane, Southern Miss, LSU and Texas A&M. But the battles with other Louisiana schools will provide fodder for the Southland season. The Cowboys have an away date with Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 2. Maybe more importantly, former Southland Conference member Louisiana-Monroe is part of a November-December home-and-home series. Those three games give McNeese a good look at opponents equal at worst to the better teams in the Southland.

PROGRAM DIRECTION: Without Bradley and Ford, there will be a drop. Pichon and Penn can check that somewhat. With Penn back, this team could still be a conference tournament participant. Just how far they go falls on the play of Kapelan and Martin.

PROBABLE STARTING LINEUP: PG Stephan Martin, SG Diego Kapelan, SF John Pichon, PF Jamarcus Little and C Kleon Penn.

ROSTER REPORT:

--McNeese picked up an extra season of eligibility for C Kleon Penn. The 6-foot-11, 285-pound shot-blocker was a junior-college transfer from the British Virgin Islands, but had played only one season there. If the Cowboys had not appealed to the NCAA, Penn's eligibility would have expired at the end of last season. Penn had a school-record 117 blocks last season.

--McNeese had three of the league's top 11 rebounders last season, and the good news for the Cowboys is that two return. F John Pichon averaged 6.4 a game (ninth), while Penn added 6.3 (11th). This still should be a strength.

--Expect more shots going up from Diego Kapelan. The guard had a mixed season last year, at times ripping through the nets from long range, at others missing miserably. Kapelan made a middling 35 percent from long range, but had no issues taking shots, making 53. With offense a priority, Kapelan will get first shot at the outside role.
