This time it's true: Big East is a beast

NEW YORK - Seemingly every time I hit a conference media day, it's the one thing I can bank on.

"I think we're the best conference in America," the coaches may as well say in unison.

It gets annoying and old, but it's almost as if it's a requirement passed down from the league office.

Well, this year when every Big East coach uttered those words, I shook my head up and down instead of side to side.

It's nearly impossible that an argument can be made for any other league in America.

"By far this is the best that it's ever been," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said.

"It's the strongest league in the history of college basketball," Louisville coach Rick Pitino added.

"The league is the best I've ever seen it," chimed in Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun.

Wow. That's even heavier Coach-Speak than usual.

But they are right.

It's hard to argue with the fact that a minimum of eight of the top 25 teams in the country, on paper, reside in the mammoth 16-team conference and that there's a legitimate chance that the Big Beast could send 10 dancing this season.

"The difference between, say, North Carolina and UConn is that UConn plays Louisville and then Pittsburgh and Villanova and then West Virginia and then Marquette," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "It's hard because the depth and balance of the league is incredible. We can't pick and choose and say we've got a big game coming a week from now. We always have big games."

Some critics will point to the fact that the league has so many numbers as a reason for its hype. However, I'd venture to say that if you put the 10th-ranked Providence Friars in the Big 12 or even the Pac-10, there's a valid argument they could be the fourth-best team.

The Big East received eight bids a year ago and returns 13 of its top 18 scorers, 10 of its top 11 rebounders and all nine of its leading distributors.

Gone are Brian Laing, Draelon Burns and Kentrell Gransberry. Hardly household names.

UConn has basically everyone of note back and the Huskies got the slight nod as the preseason favorites. Louisville lost one key piece in big man David Padgett, but the Cardinals brought in arguably the top freshman big man in the country in Samardo Samuels.

Pittsburgh returns its top three players — Sam Young, DeJuan Blair and Levance Fields. Notre Dame welcomes back the Big East Player of the Year, Luke Harangody, along with everyone else except for Rob Kurz.

New Marquette coach Buzz Williams will rely on the Golden Eagles' three senior guards — Jerel McNeal, Dominic James and Wesley Matthews. Villanova has absolutely everyone back from the team that went to the Sweet 16, yet the Wildcats are ranked fifth in the Big East.

"In most leagues, when you go to the Sweet 16 and return everybody, you're going to be one or two," 'Nova coach Jay Wright said as he shook his head.

Get the point yet or are you yearning for more?

Georgetown suffered a blow with the graduation of seniors Roy Hibbert, Jonathan Wallace and Patrick Ewing Jr., but the Hoyas just reload nowadays and brought in one of the nation's top recruiting classes to a team that still returns DaJuan Summers, Jessie Sapp and Austin Freeman.

Syracuse was decimated by injuries last season, but the Orange have arguably the nation's top point guard, Jonny Flynn, to go along with Paul Harris and two key players coming back from knee injuries — Eric Devendorf and Andy Rautins.

Providence is loaded with seniors and West Virginia, after watching Joe Alexander leave for the NBA, adds talented freshman Devin Ebanks.

"Normally I'd be upset being picked 10th," new Providence coach Keno Davis said. "But the 10th-place team could be in the Top 25 at the end of the day."

The bottom six teams in the league are no joke, either. Cincinnati's front line could look as follows by the time Big East play really gets going: Yancy Gates, John Riek and Mike Williams.

That's scary for a team picked to finish 11th in the league.

Rutgers won't be an automatic win and neither will Seton Hall, which may not have any depth, but has a backcourt in Eugene Harvey and Jeremy Hazell that many would trade for in a heartbeat.

"We're going to beat each other up, but I still think we're going to have a chance to have a record-setting number in the NCAA tournament," Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon said.

It's hard to fathom, but for once I actually believe what these guys are selling.

Kind of you to say. I'll have to send you a 'hot sauce basket'. It's nice to have Pitino as our coach. You can feel good that the players are getting the direction that they need, and UK fans hate us that much more for it, which as a UL fan, sometimes that is the best part.

I can only hope.
You've got one of the top 3 coaches in the game, so your team will always b dangerous.

I'd say I am likely off to a better start than you today. Bad news to hear about T.H. As before, his injury will help the rest of your team, and his return will mark a more team-experienced UNC basketball squad...
After last year, when Louisville lost Padgett, I was worried. Things worked out for the best in the end. The team grew into something it wouldnt have been without Padgetts injury... Perhaps the same will happen to UNC...

tom
Welome to tomorrow. Since T Hansbrough's not on your team, I assume your day is off to a better start than mine.

It was fun while it lasted, but I'm just not feeling it this morning. Maybe it's because we've found the common ground of Texas Pete. I'm sure ours is not the first relationship it saved.

You?re right. You've implied nothing about me, in any way fashion or form, in a negative manner. "....Are you confusing yourself with me?" ?This is your "I know you are but what am I" scenario playing out again... Texas Pete is pretty good hot sauce, I'll grant you that. It?s definitely not made in New York City. More later perhaps, remain calm. Out of time for today? If you feel the necessity to continue, there is always tomorrow?

1. My wife just turned 30 on 10/27, and she is a fitness instructor. She'll vouch for my stamina.

2. My bio it true. Others have been known to lie.

3. Again you say nothing. Your previous #3 was just a lame intro to paragraph 4.

4. You cut and paste me yet again (previous post). How does that relate to my wife? What names have I called you? Bottom Feeder? Loser?....Are you confusing yourself with me?

5. More name calling.

6. Being an HPU grad does not require me to be a fan of their sports programs. K Kreme is my hometown's claim to fame, along with RJRtobacco and Texas Pete hot sauce. Do I have to eat doughuts and smoke cigarettes just because I grew up there? I prefer Dunkin Donuts. I will say that Texas Pete is an excellent hot sauce. If you can't tie in the no football team, no loss bit of humor, I can't help you.

You know, johneno1, I do other things besides post to this site. While I do enjoy our little chats, if it takes a while for responses, it?s probably because I have other things going on. From there, let?s do the paragraph analysis as you would:

1. As far as your stamina, well, we?d have to ask your wife. Be mindful of your hip when you are active. You assume a great deal about those who?s background you have no idea.

2. It is a bit shady on your part to give false information on your profile.
What have you to hide?

3. Blah, Blah? That?s it? We'll take that as an acknowledgement on your part. Sometimes the truth hurts Johnny-Boy.

4. Didn?t your wife come up with that quote? You accuse me of ?I know you are, but what am I?? Seriously, look at what you have written here. If you actually had a true understanding of college basketball, as you claim, you?d have answered any of the questions asked of you instead of the name calling. Honestly, didn?t you quit all that after elementary school? Apparently not.

5. Another ?superior mind? regressing to juvenility I guess. Yeah, good call. Your ammo is real heavy. I?ve never seen a grown man dictate his ideas like a child before.

6. Lets go back to false ?Bio? information. You bio states:
?High Point University grad (we've never lost a football game!) Winston-Salem NC native (home of Krispy Kreme!). Now live in Maryland. Favorite sport is college basketball. Lifetime UNC fan. ?
If you?re going to lie about your alumni at least make it a good lie. High Point U? Seriously. The Krispy Kreme reference also lets us all know what an athlete you are. Let?s say you did intend a joke? at least make it humorous next time.

I will always respect uconn for denying duke the title in '99. They tarnished it a bit by denying ga tech the title in '04.
I'll never forgive marquette for denying unc the title in '77. I consider that game a gift to al maguire by the officials, whether it's true or not.
I'll never like georgetown, simply because I cannot get Patrick Ewing Sr.'s ugliness out of my head.
I have no idea why I don't like syracuse, I just never have.
I'll always have a soft spot for villanova for that huge upset over gtown in '85.
I'm completely indifferent to the rest of conference.
That's my opinion of the big east.

tom
As always, great stuff!

To keep it simple for you, I'll respond per paragraph.

1. Unlike yourself, I do not need hours of prep time to form coherent thoughts. This 44 year old still plays league soccer, basketball, and flag football, all in 18 and up leagues. I am superior to your 28 year of self in these 3 and any other sport. You are slower and have nowhere near my stamina.

2. Do you really believe what people put in their profiles? That's a bit gullible on your part.

3. Blah and blah...

4. Yet another quote from a superior mind.

5. Excellent use of the "I know you are, but what am I?" defense. Are you saving the rubber/glue comeback for later? That's some heavy ammo you've got there.

6. 1. Another example of your failure to grasp humor. 2. Have I ever professed to being a HPU sports fan?

johneno1, try reading without emotion. That means: be calm before you start. Read everything without a sense of urgency or malice. It should sound as it does when your psychiatrist speaks to you; calm and relaxing. I would say read at a slow pace but I?m sure you already do. Imagine, as you read, someone speaking in a voice sixteen years younger than your own. A confident voice that knows he could run circles around, not an old man, but one who is desperately past his prime at age 44.

You make this far too easy. For a man 44 years of age, I?d thought you would have had the time to develop a bit more of a savvy grasp on things in the technological world as they develop. Click on anyone's profile name in the comment section. This action will bring up their respective 'bio'. From this you can see location, age, and sex of the individual behind the posts. Normally I?d be happy to accentuate your spelling discrepancies, but, since your apparent inability to learn is so very pronounced, I see no real point. At any rate, there were so many errors and misconceptions in your last post it would probably be better for you to just start over (once again nothing from your post is based on fact of any kind).

It sounds to me as though some of your personal qualities are bleeding through into your thoughts of despise for me?

?overweight, with an excess of nostril hair, poor hygiene habits, a fat ugly wife that you despise?, (your profile lists you as married, not mine), ?and false memories of an athletic past that never existed. In an attempt to escape the reality of your pitiful life, you turn to the internet in hopes of appearing, intelligent, likeable, and someone who is without bias and possesses a true understanding of college basketball.?

From the sounds of this you must have experience in something after all. I didn?t say experience in something great and respectable, but without bottom feeders like you, everyone would be on the same level. Thanks for reminding us all how much better we have since losers like you are around.

By the way:
1. You have to have a football team in order for your football team to lose a game.
2. I?ll enjoy watching Winthop dominate your High Point boys as usual.

tom
Yet aother nice novella. Can you get a point across in less than 6000 words?
You acuse me of anger, then regress into an angry rant of drivel.
Were I less of a man, like you for example, I would reply with my own assumptions as to why you are so full of anger.
I would probably speculate that you are in your mid 50s, overweight, with an excess of nostril hair, poor hygiene habits, a fat ugly wife that you despise, and false memories of an athletic past that never existed. In an attempt to escape the reality of your pitiful life, you turn to the internet in hopes of appearing, intelligent, likeable, and someone who is without bias and possesses a true understanding of college basketball.
Since I have a higher regard for my fellow man, I shall refuse to stoop to your level.
I have no jealousy of the big east, as they are unworthy of jealousy, especially when compared to the storied past of the acc.
My knowledge equals or surpasses your own. I however, feel no need to throw it into the face of others.
Once more tom: You are incapable of making me angry. You however, leave you buttons naked, exposed and easy to push.

That's the funny thing johneno1, you like to say that you have knowledge and you give implication to others that you would like to enlighten us all; yet somehow you never seem to say anything relevant to any point based upon sports. Your ?tongue in cheek? comment is really more along the lines of ?foot in mouth?. While I?m sure you?d be happy to repost to Raynman215, I seriously doubt that you?d keep with your own topic on why it is you feel he is mistaken. I?m fairly sure that, likely, you?d go off on tangents in any of 360 degrees range from where you started. Your mistake, Johnny-Boy, is to think that any of this angers me or anyone else on these sites. Discounting those individuals with inflated and irrelevant opinions brings satisfaction to all sports lovers who enjoy posting to the stories we so enjoy reading. The reason that we are all on these sports sites is to discuss these topics, employ and defend our opinions, and nullify those that make no sense. So, please, feel free to post more meaningless ideas. Please, continue to entertain us all. It seems that you?re a Star Wars fan by one of your previous posts (By the way, big east bias does not basketball knowledge make.), so let me say this? ?Anger leads to fear, fear leads to hate.? Surely by now you must live in hate that you posses an inability to respond to any sports topics presented to you with real life statistics or facts. Along with this previous logic, it would seem you have feared your lack of knowledge to reinforce your statements. Inevitably, it must all draw from anger. Why is it you?re angry? Is it because you haven?t the ability to form sensible responses in relation to their questions? Is it a bad childhood memory that resurfaces when you are tested? Or maybe perhaps, back to our root topic; is it that you jealous of the Big East Conference? Feel free to re-post. It may be tomorrow before I check back. Have a nice day.

tom
I make a tongue in cheek comment which you take as literal, which is fine.
Your mistake is in your condescending reply in which you attempt to insult my intelligence. Learn to disagree without talking down to people. Though you love to cut and paste my comments, you failed to post the one that immediately followed, in which I further indicated it was in jest.

Lighten up and live longer. You're not bright enough to stay so angry. It's not healthy.

johneno-- boy i bet you would like the acc to take credit for any success you can squeeze out of miami and b.c. When miami first joined the big east, most people didn't know they had a basketball team. it took 5-6 years but they actually put together a couple of good teams, even being ranked in the top ten in the nation. but low fan support and very little money support are a hard obstacle to overcome. the success miami has right now will not be there in a couple of years. they are one of those programs that every 9-10 years has a decent team. that was my point. the same goes for b.c. except for different reasons. their biggest problem is they are located in new england where the recuits are light and whatever good there is goes to uconn. as far as va. tech, they just sucked through and through. any talent on their team is just as fortunate as davidson having a good team. i'm sure you don't think a team like davidson is now going to be a top 25 team year in and year out. then the same goes for a team like va. tech.

johneno1:
After this post:

johneno1
10/28/2008
10:28 AM
At least the acc has enough of a sack to require each school to have a basketball AND football team.
Someone seems to have stolen 8 of your football teams.
How can a school (NDame) be both in a conference and an independent?
Only 8 schools should be eligible for tourney bids, or all 16 should field big east football teams.
There's something very fishy going on up there. Never trust yankees.

I started it? You had it coming. These words (yours above) were what we?ll call questionable; else, my response to you would never have been negative? It was you sir, who attacked first, indirectly as it may be. I hold you in no contempt, nor do I hold an opinion of you in anger. I apologize if you were upset by my responding comments, but I felt the response to your post above was warranted considering your references to the ACC?s ?sack? as well as the ?yankee? remark. I think if we can agree to disagree then maybe we can end the back and forth seeing as how this can go on forever and we both likely have better things to do with our time?

Good Day,
Tom J
