Season Outlook
Michigan State looked like anything but a team capable of advancing to a Final Four this season when the Spartans were humiliated by Memphis in the Sweet 16 last March.
At one point, Tom Izzo's team was down, 50-20.
Then you toss in the fact that the starting guard, Drew Neitzel, graduated and how in the world can I have Michigan State at No. 2 in the country?
This year's Spartans will be better.
Neitzel didn't play well for much of the season and now Izzo will be forced to go with guys like Chris Allen and Durrell Summers freshmen a year ago. Michigan State was overmatched by the bigger, stronger Memphis wings and had no answer.
Allen and Summers have a year under their belt now and are both athletic and strong.
But this team will have multiple options.
Sophomore Kalin Lucas is extremely quick and took little time to establish himself as one of the top young floor leaders in the country. Travis Walton is the leader of the team and also gives Izzo a quality defender coming off the bench.
Look for Allen and Summers to battle for the remaining starting spot on the perimeter.
Up front, you've got Raymar Morgan, a 6-foot-8 junior combo forward who averaged 14 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last season, and Goran Suton, an underrated 6-foot-10 fifth-year senior who will be solid in the post.
The bench will be strong with either Allen or Summers, Walton, veteran big man Marquise Gray and Idong Ibok and the addition of athletic 6-foot-8 freshman forward Delvon Roe, who could be a difference-maker if he remains healthy.
There's little question that the Spartans will go to the Big Dance for the 12th consecutive time in the Izzo Era, but don't be surprised if Michigan State makes its fifth Final Four appearance with Izzo at the helm.
If it happens this year, don't forget that the Final Four is just down the road in Detroit.

ie-<br /><br />Bo Who??????<br /><br />Have you seen the Spartans yet this year? You've got a very ruse awakening coming. Look at the "Big Picture" regarding Izzo- NOBODY owns Izzo ya doo-dah

Cubby Rice: you said: "Prediction: Maryland will beat them early this year as always!!!"<br /><br />I only remember the Twerps winning in 2006 (Coaches vs. Cancer Classic). I remember whipping up on the Twerps in the tourney in 2003 I believe. I live in MD and went to MSU and I can promise, your program wishes it was half as good as MSU's.

Unlike their football team Clemson's basketball team is superbly coached and they have a better looking offense this year. (not to mention this team can hit a free throw).<br /><br />They knocked #7 Duke out of the tournament last year.<br /><br />They lost to North Carolina in Overtime with a buzzer shot. They lost to North Carolina again in DOUBLE overtime.<br /><br />And then only lost to the #1 team in the nation in the ACC tournament by 5 points.<br /><br />Yet they aren't even in the top 25???<br /><br />Remember, this isn't the football team.

jmntiger, get your stretching exercises done early, I would hate for you to break your back trying to fulfil your promise!

jmntigr,<br /><br />Why don't you e-mail Izzo & ask him if he cares about his student/athlete's educations? He has lost many under-grads to the pros over the years (Zach Randolph, Jason Richardson), but i bet he'd rather they stay in school. How do you build a program when you have a player for one year? I guess you know more about that than Izzo,eh? Where should we expect to see you coaching? Character matters where i'm from!! Perhaps you prefer the "one hit wonders."<br />"This is what it means to be elite: 6 final 4 appearances."

jmntiger,<br /><br />clearly u r a hater. i will be waiting to hear from u on Dec 3rd. u r sorely underestimating izzo's coaching abillty. last year's team was seriously lacking talent. I've seen MSU's pre-season games & this team is; fast, big, strong and they can shoot!!<br />This team is going to be the best team since the LAST Championship team, maqybe better. (Yes, MSU has more than one.) How many times has Memphis won????

Like someone said below jmntiger...pucker up. I watched the Spartans in Breslin last night and I am here to tell you, they are ready. They are 14 people deep, big and everybody can play. Lucas, Allen, Summers etc. just play better than most. Add the bigs (and there are a lot of bigs) and you have a team unlike any in recent years...and I am talking MSU years. This is the best I have ever seen back to the Magic days.

Spartinintx-<br />While we were dunking on your parents during the sweet 16 last year, were you really turning to your buddies saying, "You know, at least we graduate 82% of our guys." <br />WHO CARES!<br />Cal is trying to use that same logic that we're graduating 70% plus of our guys, and it doesn't matter. Graduate half. Play for the title every year. And any fan alive would go for that. If you say you would not, then you are so full of it.<br />You're telling me you wouldn't take Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, or Michael Beasley for one year?!?<br />BULL-SQUAT if you said no. I'll bet you Izzo's salary HE would.

Tiger<br /><br />Neitzel was not our best player. Memphis smacked most teams LAST year, and pay attention that you don't know him yet..Delvon Roe. He was a top ten player before he tore his ACL his senior year and fell off the map. We will be better this year.<br /><br />Yes the Big Ten is down THIS year. (still more NCAA wins than any other conference, so go ahead and hate) That's why Izzo schedules UNC, Kansas, Texas. We will find out how good we are, and we will have as good of a chance as anyone to go to the final four. Really after UNC, the next 5 or 6 are interchangable. Looking forward to Dec. 3rd.<br /><br />GO GREEN

I can respect your opinion HeelFan. Nobody else has MSU this high so Goodman seems to be a bit more optimistic than most. None of these spots will be static throughout the season but I do think top six is appropriate for State. But the thought of ND ahead of them makes me sick. I'm looking forward to the game against UNC on 12/3 to see how we measure up.
spartanintx11/8/2008 15:10:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
After UNC, there's very little difference in the next ten teams. You could put the names in a bag, shake it up and pull them out. That random draw is just as likely to be right as any preseason poll.

But that's the point....we don't play our best basketball until after conference play is done. You're right that the Big Ten sucks overall but that doesn't mean anything come March. The Big Ten is all about physical play and protecting home court. MSU is in the top five over the past ten years in terms of program results -- better than Memphis or Pitt -- and we've done it without the start recruits. <br /><br />We've had a lot of players go to the NBA that never made All American in high school or college. I'm glad we don't get the one-and-done superstars that are becoming commonplace because it allows the players to develop and the program to flourish over time. And Izzo has an 82% graduation rate to go with the basketball results. How many does Memphis graduate, or doesn't that matter to you?
spartanintx11/8/2008 11:23:00 AM(Report inappropriate content)
Mich St doesn't get past Pittsburgh without Neitzel, first of all. Big 10 is as over rated as any conference in any sport. You guys play NO ONE in conference. You guys MIGHT be 4th best team in ACC, Big 12, or Big East. Enjoy your conference run, because it's over come March. Good luck though.
jmntiger11/8/2008 10:35:00 AM(Report inappropriate content)
They listed someone else's key games; MSU doesn't play those teams. However, they do play North Carolina, Texas, Gonzaga, and several other big games this year. <br /><br />jmntiger, you'd better start bending over and puckering because Izzo has taken less talent to the Final Four before, and these kids can play. Durrell Summers could be a beast this year and Kalin Lucas will run the point with the best of them. Izzo has a better tournament record than regular season record becasue he uses the season to prepare them for bigger things. He's all about rebounding and defense but this year he will turn on the jets and let this group run. Neitzel provided leadership but he became a liability last year with his lack of production. They will miss Drew Namick more than Drew Nietzel. This group will definitely be better than last year.
spartanintx11/8/2008 10:02:00 AM(Report inappropriate content)
Maybe add North Carolina to those key games. #1 vs #2? Just a thought...
st801511/8/2008 9:48:00 AM(Report inappropriate content)
Let me get this straight. The Big 10--which was humiliated in the tourney last year--has a team in the top 5 that lost its best player. Got smacked in the NCAA by Memphis. Does not have a top 10 player on their roster in the incoming class, and THEY are the number 2 team?!?<br />Looks like Goodman is drinking the Izzo Kool Aid again. Don't make the same mistake two years in a row by only annointing the power conferences and their"big time coaches." If this team makes it to the Elite 8, I'll kiss my own arse.
