Nov. 21--High Point -- The $2 million renovation project at the Millis Center ended weeks ago, but High Point University's basketball team remains a work zone.

The Panthers took another step in their development on Thursday night by swamping Atlanta Christian College 91-51 in their home opener.

"We're definitely making progress," said coach Bart Lundy.

Junior guard Eugene Harris led a balanced attack with 17 points and three 3-pointers as High Point (1-1) overcame a slow start with a 27-1 surge over parts of the first and second halves. The Panthers improved to 29-2 at home since the start of the 2006-07 season and won their 20th straight nonconference game at the Millis Center.

Freshman guard Nick Barbour came off the bench for 13 points, three 3-pointers and a game-high five assists. Junior center Cruz Daniels roamed for 10 points and led all players with eight rebounds and six blocks. Sophomores David Campbell and Earnest Bridges contributed eight points and seven rebounds each.

HPU's 10th season of NCAA Division I basketball got off to a bad start last Friday in a 29-point loss at Duquesne. The Panthers showed flashes of improvement against the Chargers (6-3), a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

"We played really well," said Barbour, who matched Harris by going 3-of-6 on 3-pointers. "We got better on our defense, our transition and running our plays."

HPU trailed twice in the first 31/2 minutes. The game was tied after almost seven minutes before the Panthers went on a 20-3 run, starting with 3-pointers from Harris, Barbour and Harris again.

Campbell had all four of his offensive rebounds and all his points in the first half.

"David and his energy really picked us up," Lundy said.

The Panthers scored the final 17 points of the first half to lead 46-17.

The surge was capped by a 3-pointer from Harris and a dunk by freshman Steadman Short after Campbell made a diving steal at midcourt.

HPU stayed hot early in the second half, using six straight points by Daniels -- including two dunks -- to start a 10-1 run.

"I was loving it," said the 6-foot-11 Daniels. "It was great. We played a decent team with decent skills, but we were just too big inside."

Two HPU players expected to make big contributions -- forwards Jourdan Morris and Corey Law -- have yet to see action because of injuries.

The Panthers play at N.C. State on Saturday and South Florida on Tuesday before returning home to face Montreat a week from tonight.
