College basketball roundup No. 4 UCLA falls

to steady Michigan

Showing poise down the stretch and playing stellar defense, Michigan pulled off its first win over a top-five team in 11 years.

DeShawn Sims scored 18 points, including an emphatic dunk on a backdoor cut with time running down, and Manny Harris added 15 for the Wolverines (3-0) in a 55-52 upset of No. 4 UCLA (2-1) on Thursday night in the 2K Sports Classic in New York.

The Wolverines' last victory over a top-five team came in 1997 against No. 1 Duke --Michigan's opponent in the title game tonight. The 10th-ranked Blue Devils, led by Gerald Henderson's 22 points, beat Southern Illinois 83-58. Kyle Singler of South Medford had 13.

Seton Hall 63, No. 19 USC: Jeremy Hazell scored 17 points to lead the Pirates (3-0) past the Trojans (2-1) in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan. Taj Gibson led the Trojans (2-1) with 19 points.

Add USC: Guard Noel Johnson of Fayetteville, Ga., , whose father, Lynbert Johnson, played in the NBA with Golden State in the early 1980s, and forward Derrick Williams of La Mirada, Calif., signed national letters of intent with the Trojans.

Washington 74, Florida International 51: Justin Dentmon scored 21 points and freshman Isaiah Thomas added 19 as the Huskies (2-1) rallied from a halftime deficit to beat FIU (2-1) in Seattle. Jon Brockman scored 10 points.

California 85, Texas-Pan American 58: Jamal Boykin matched his career high with 18 points to lead the Bears (3-0) to the win in the first round of the Global Sports Classic in Berkeley. TPA (1-1) was led by Emmanuel Jones with 21.

Teams combine for 282 points: Trevor Cook scored a career-high 20 points as Texas Tech (3-0) defeated East Central 167-115 in the Legends Classic in Lubbock, Texas. It was the most points scored by the Red Raiders.

Women

No. 21 Purdue 70, Portland 50: Portland's Laiken Dollente scored a game-high 19 points, but the Boilermakers had four players score in double figures to win in West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue (2-0), which led 42-20 at halftime, was led by FahKara Malonewith 17. Portland is 1-2.

No. 8 Stanford 81, New Mexico 65: Jillian Harmon of Lake Oswego led five players in double figures with 13 points, and the Cardinal (2-1) beat the Lobos (3-1) in Stanford, Calif.
