Local sports notebook: Woodside, NDSU face Minnesota today

Nov. 29--Senior guard Ben Woodside of Albert Lea will join his North Dakota State University men's basketball team for a game against Minnesota today at 1 p.m.

The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Woodside scored a game-high 29 points and set a school record for free throws in North Dakota State's 89-82 win over Northern Arizona this past Tuesday. Woodside was 10-for-12 at the foul line and now has made 473 free throws in his career, breaking the 48-year-old record of 465.

Through three games the high-scoring Woodside leads NDSU in scoring at 22.0 points per game. He was shooting a torrid 52.5 percent from the field and 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from 3-point range. He's also averaging 7.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds a game.

Drew Lundberg, a former Owatonna standout, is also in the NDSU program. The sophomore transferred after spending one season at Northern Iowa. He played in five games a year ago as a true freshman at Northern Iowa and had nine points in one contest. Lundberg is redshirting this season. He is Owatonna's all-time leading scorer with 1,565 points.

Rochester native and current Washington Nationals minor leaguer Dan Lyons will be signing autographs from 10-11 a.m. on Dec. 7 at Holiday Inn South as part of the Southeastern Minnesota Sports Cards Collector's show.

Lyons is a graduate of Century and went on to play college ball at Iowa Central Community College and the University of Minnesota. Following his college days and stints with the Rochester Honkers, he was drafted in the 14th round of the 2007 draft by the Nationals. Lyons finished this past season with the Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League where his team won the league championship.

Three area football players from Carleton College have been named to the all-conference team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wide receiver Matt Frank of Caledonia, safety Drew Ziller of Byron and defensive end John Hanks of LeRoy were all named to the first team. All three are seniors.

Frank led Carleton with 90 catches for 990 yards and 12 touchdowns in just nine games.

Ziller led the team with 104 tackles, five for loss and had three sacks, three interceptions, blocked two kicks, forced six fumbles and recovered one fumble. He also returned one blocked kick for a touchdown.

Hanks had 37 tackles, 10 1/2 for loss and 8 1/2 sacks. He forced four fumbles and recovered one.

Mabel-Canton grad Karlie Urbaniak has been named second-team All- Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Fairfield University in volleyball.

Urbaniak averaged 2.71 digs, 0.52 blocks, and 1.79 kills per set. She played in every set this season and recorded 10 or more digs in 21 of Farifield's 31 matches.

Urbaniak set numerous career highs this season including 18 digs in a match. She was also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for the second straight season.

Two players from Rochester have been named to the MIAC all-conference team in men's and women's soccer.

K.C. Beed, a John Marshall grad, was named to the women's first team. She is a sophomore midfielder at St. Olaf. Beed was fifth on the team in scoring with two goals and five assists. St. Olaf finished 8-9-1.

John Zietlow, a Mayo grad, was named to the men's first team. He is also a sophomore midfielder at St. Olaf. He led St. Olaf in scoring with 13 goals and 13 assists as the team finished 10-7-1. Zietlow had three game-winning goals.
