Around Crofton: Crofton athlete to play in football Youth All-American Bowl Jan. 4
by PAULA POPP For The Capital , The Capital
"I'm looking forward to meeting the other kids," said Jay whose favorite NFL football player is Randy Moss, wide receiver for the New England Patriots.
FBU regional directors and scouts identified the top youth talent in America after interviewing the seventh- and eighth-grade nominees and reviewing their highlight tapes.
"Jay is a terrific player, boasting great natural tools that make him a threat both ways. His size and strength let him transition seamlessly between wide receiver and free safety, said Kristian Dyer, director of communications with SportsLink in Wharton, N.J.
"He represents the Pasadena Chargers and Maryland football very well."
The Crofton Middle School student started playing football five years ago with the Laurel Hurricanes in Prince George's County, then moved to full contact with the Severn Seminoles at Montpelier Elementary School in Prince George's County before landing in Anne Arundel County with the Pasadena Chargers.
In 2007 and 2008, Jay led his league in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches. His current highlight video is already gaining the attention of some high school and college coaches.
Pasadena Chargers Coach Donny English of Columbia has guided the team to first place in both the 2008 County Championships and the Anne Arundel Athletic Youth Football Association's All-Star game.
Mr. English has nicknamed Jay "Smooth," for his laid-back nature. Fellow teammate and cousin, Pierre Johnson of Pasadena, said he is his cousin's sidekick and cheerleader since Jay doesn't show his excitement after making a touchdown.
Jay's five sisters, Jasmine, Shanika, Shontae, Shanita and Jamika will be watching their brother's football game from home, but his mom, Rita Smith, and his dad, James Lamont Smith, along with his cousin, will travel to Texas with Jay.
Jay is an honor-roll student and also enjoys spending time with his friends and playing basketball.
His physical education teacher, Donna McGowan, nominated him for the 2008 United States Achievement Academy where he was honored with a National Award in physical education.
