EDISON - Past and present Rutgers University sports figures will dominate the awards winners Jan. 25 at the 73rd anniversary banquet of the New Jersey Sports Writers Association at The Pines Manor.

Four will be going into the association's Hall of Fame, as former women's basketball stars Patti and Mary Coyle will be honored, along with former men's basketball coach Bill Foster and all-time great football tight end Marco Battaglia. The Coyle sisters are coaches, Patti with the New York Liberty of the WNBA and Mary, whose married namen is Klinger, at Rutgers Prep. Foster was RU head coach during the 1970s when the Scarlet Knights began to play competitively at the higher level of Division I basketball, and Battaglia went from Rutgers to the NFL, where he enjoyed a career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Also being honored is Mike Teel, who became the all-time leading Rutgers quarterback in many statistical categories this season. Like Rutgers, Teel got off to a slow start in September, but then he led Rutgers to seven consecutive victories and an 8-5 record. He has been named the association's Big East Conference Player of the Year.

Mets third baseman David Wright is being honored as Sports Humanitarian of the Year, and former Mets pitcher Ron Darling is receiving an award for radio and television broadcasting excellence.

Also being inducted into the Hall of Fame are: former South River resident Joe Theismann, who went on to a distinguished career as a quarterback for Notre Dame and the Washington Redskins. Theismann, an ESPN analyst, will be joined by O.J. Anderson, the Giants running back who was 1991 Super Bowl MVP.

Other honorees are: Anthony and William Perretti, standardbred co-breeders of the year; Anita Kubicka, Montclair State softball coach and college coach of the year; Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State cornerback and college defensive player of the year from Piscataway; 2008 Hambletonian champion Ray Schnittker, standardbred horseman of the year; and New York Times columnist Frank Litsky for journalism excellence. Longtime great New Jersey high school football coach Warren Wolf of Brick Township High School will be honored by the association for his 361 victories.

Former Gov. Brendan T. Byrne will be a guest speaker.

The dinner begins at 11:30 a.m. and tickets are available for $55 apiece by sending checks made payable to the N.J. Sports Writers Association, and mailed to P.O.Box 200, Metuchen, N.J. 08840.
