Hogs upset No. 4 Sooners

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Michael Washington had 24 points and 11 rebounds, holding his own against Oklahoma's Blake Griffin, and Arkansas handed the fourth-ranked Sooners their first loss of the season, 96-88 on Tuesday night.

The Razorbacks (10-1) led by 25 points in the second half before the Sooners nearly pulled off a sensational rally. Oklahoma (12-1) cut the margin to 81-77, but Washington scored Arkansas' next seven points to enable the Hogs to hold on.

When it was over, Rotnei Clarke - an Arkansas freshman from Verdigris, Okla. - held the ball and shared a hug with Washington as the final seconds ticked away on Oklahoma's unbeaten record.

Freshman Willie Warren scored 35 points for the Sooners, while Griffin had 21 points and 13 rebounds.

SEC

Southern Miss 78, Ole Miss 59 at Biloxi, Miss.: Courtney Beasley scored 19 points and was one of five Southern Miss players to score in double figures, Jeremy Wise scored 17 points for the Golden Eagles (9-4). It was the first win for Southern Miss over Ole Miss since Dec. 22, 1994,

San Diego 64, Miss. State 61 (OT) at Starkville, Miss.: Trumaine Johnson had 17 points and De'Jon Jackson added 13 points to lead San Diego (7-7) MSU fell to 8-5.

Florida 78, Stetson 57 at Gainesville, Fla.: Nick Calathes scored 23 points, Alex Tyus added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Florida beat Stetson despite giving up 20 offensive rebounds.

The Gators (11-2) won their fifth straight. The Hatters are 5-5.

(20) Clemson 98, South Carolina 87 at Columbia, S.C.: Terrence Oglesby had six 3-pointers and scored 25 points and Clemson improved to 13-0 for the second time in three seasons with a victory over South Carolina (9-2).

Alabama 86, Quincy 58 at Tuscaloosa, Ala.: Senario Hillman scored 17 points to pace all five Alabama starters in double figures and the Crimson Tide (9-3) defeated Quincy (6-3).

C-USA

(25) Butler 72, Alabama-Birmingham 68 at Indianapolis: Freshman Shelvin Mack made five 3-pointers in the first seven minutes of the second half to match his career high of 22 points and rally Butler (11-1) from an 11-point deficit to a victory over Alabama-Birmingham (8-5).

It was the first time the young Bulldogs played since moving into the Top 25 on Monday.

Houston 80, Massachusetts 54 at Houston: Qa'rraan Calhoun scored 26 points and Aubrey Coleman had a double-double to help Houston beat Massachusetts.

Coleman scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds, and Kelvin Lewis added 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Cougars (8-2).

Anthony Gurley led Massachusetts (5-7) with 17 points.

BYU 74, Tulsa 68 at Tulsa, Okla.: Lee Cummard scored 26 points, including five free throws in the final 36 seconds, as Brigham Young (11-1) held off Tulsa (8-5).

Top 25

(6) Wake Forest 83, Radford 61 at Winston-Salem, N.C.: Jeff Teague scored 11 of his 19 points in the second half, and Wake Forest (12-0) shook off a sluggish start to beat Radford (4-9).

Freshman Al-Farouq Aminu added 18 points and 10 rebounds and James Johnson had 12 points and 12 boards for the Demon Deacons.

Illinois 71, (9) Purdue 67 (OT) at West Lafayette, Ind.: Mike Tisdale scored 18 points and Illinois defeated Purdue in overtime in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Mike Davis scored 12 points, Trent Meacham added 11 and Demetri McCamey had 10 for the Fighting Illini (13-1), who won their seventh straight.

E'Twaun Moore scored 17 points and JaJuan Johnson had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Purdue (11-3), which had won its previous six games.

(13) Syracuse 100, Seton Hall 76 at Syracuse N.Y.: Eric Devendorf and Andy Rautins both hit three 3-pointers in a six-minute span to key a stirring first-half surge, and Syracuse (13-1) beat Seton Hall (9-4) in the Big East opener for both teams

It was the fourth straight win for Syracuse since a last-second loss to Cleveland State two weeks ago.

Shelton State women 62, Southwest Tennessee 46 at Verties Salis Gymnasium: Mariame Sylla led Southwest (5-7) with 11 points in the Lady Saluqis Classic game. Shelton State improved to 10-4.
