Akeem Gooding scored a game-high 14 points, and Ryan Bacon added 13 points and eight rebounds, but St. Peter's College lost to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Siena College, 65-52, yesterday in Albany, N.Y.

Alex Franklin had 13 points and nine rebounds and Kenny Hasbrouck scored 13 to lead Siena (10-4, 4-0). The Saints led 33-19 at halftime after limiting Saint Peter's (4-10, 1-3) to 7-for-23 shooting from the field and forcing 10 turnovers.

It was the eighth win in nine games for Siena, which faces defending national champion Kansas, which features former St. Anthony freshman standout Tyshawn Taylor, tomorrow.

STATEN ISLAND 82, NJCU 76

The 2009 portion of the New Jersey City University men's basketball schedule saw the Gothic Knights play the way 2008 ended - with a regional road setback.

Two College of Staten Island players scored 24 points as the Dolphins shot 57.1 percent from three-point range and used an 11-0 run late in the first half to take control of the game, stunning NJCU in a non-conference game at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center on Saturday in Willowbrook, N.Y.

ST. John Fisher 60, STEVENS 52

The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to 0-2 in the Empire 8 after a 60-52 loss in Pittsford, N.Y. at the hands of St. John Fisher College. For the second-straight conference game, the Ducks struggled from the field, shooting just 26.7 percent for the game and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line.

The Ducks (7-4 overall) were led by 19 points from senior guard Anthony Passalacqua, and the eight points and 15 rebounds of freshman forward Simon Smith. Senior guard Virgil Gray scored 12 points for Stevens.

St. John Fisher College (7-1, 2-0) was led by Mike Wopperer who scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

R-NEWARK 85, MEDGAR EVERS 42

Rookie guard Greg Moore of Jersey City via Bayonne High scored all 10 of his points and collected four steals as Rutgers-Newark constructed a 42-12 halftime lead, courtesy of an explosive 26-0 run to start the consolation game of the Sig Makofski Invitational in Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday.

Connecticut 80, Rutgers 49

Hasheem Thabeet led a balanced Connecticut attack with 15 points and eight rebounds, and the second-ranked Huskies (12-1, 1-1 Big East ) snapped back from their first loss of the season with a 80-49 win over Rutgers on Saturday night in Storrs, Conn.

It was the third consecutive loss to a highly ranked team for Rutgers (9-6, 0-2), which was beaten last Sunday by No. 1 North Carolina and lost on Wednesday to No. 3 Pittsburgh.

Freshman guard Mike Rosario of Jersey City, who had 26 points against the Tar Heels and 22 against Pitt, hit just two of 13 shots from the field and finished with 10 points for Rutgers.
