UMBC 61, MAINE 59

Darryl Proctor had 26 points and eight rebounds, reserve Rich Flemming added 11 points and the UMBC men held off Maine, 61-59, last night at RAC Arena to earn their fourth straight victory over the Black Bears. Proctor hit a fast-break layup - one of his 12 baskets - to give the Retrievers a 51-40 lead with 9:39 left before Mark Socoby (20 points) rallied Maine.
The junior guard's put-back brought the Black Bears within 57-55 with 4:17 left, and Sean McNally's layup narrowed Maine's deficit to 59-57 with 1:13 left. But after Proctor hit a foul-line jumper to put UMBC (7-7, 1-1 America East ) up 61-57 with 58 seconds left, the Black Bears (6-10, 1-2) did not make another field goal, losing for the sixth time in seven games. Socoby's 22-footer at the buzzer hit the back of the rim. Proctor shot 12-for-14 and had two assists, two steals and two blocked shots in playing all 40 minutes. His 12 field goals are his most as a Retriever, and the senior forward is averaging 27 points in his past three games. Jay Greene had 11 assists for UMBC, which scored 22 points off 18 turnovers. The Retrievers continued to shoot poorly from three-point range, hitting one of five attempts; they have made just two in their past three games. Maine reserve Malachi Peay was the only other player in double figures with 13 points.
