Indian River grad Medley keys Elon's upset, earns Southern Conf. honor college report

Indian River product Courtney Medley made the most of a demanding freshman basketball campaign for Elon (5-26).

The rookie forward walk-on was named to the Southern Conference all-freshmen team and keyed Elon's upset of Georgia Southern in the opening round of the league tournament.

The 5-foot-9 Medley riddled the Eagles for a season-high 25 points, helping the Phoenix become the first 11th seed to win a game in SC tournament history. Medley averaged 8 points and 3 rebounds .

* Kim Rodgers, a redshirt freshman from Princess Anne, sparked Maryland off the bench with 12 points in Sunday's ACC tournament championship overtime win against Duke. Rodgers, who missed last seaason with a knee injury, made 4 of 5 shots from the field and was 3 for 3 from the foul line. Teammate Melissa Coleman called Rodgers, who averaged 10 points in three tourney games, "the hero of the tournament."

* Brian Gilmore, a mainstay at Norfolk Collegiate and Great Bridge, made second-team all- Patriot League for American University. The senior ranked eighth in the conference with an 11.8 scoring average and in rebounding at 5.5. Sunday, his 19 points led the Eagles past Army in the Patriot semifinals. Gilmore made 1 of 2 free throws with 3.6 seconds left to provide the margin in the 61-60 win that put AU (23-7) in Friday's league title game. Gilmore also hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 60 with 42 seconds left.

* Kempsville graduate Esty Flores is the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year. The Barton College junior guard, a three-time all-conference selection, led the league in scoring, at 20.9 ppg, was third in assists (116) and fifth in steals (60). "She increased her scoring and took on a bigger role," Barton coach Wendee Sainsing said after Flores led Barton to the regular-season title.

* Former Granby All-Tidewater performer Kendrick Easley was voted Conference Carolinas Player of the Year for Mount Olive. The junior guard averaged 21 points and had a streak of 10 consecutive games with at least 20 points at the end of the season.

* Georgetown junior Shanice Fuller from Indian River was a recent Big East Honor Roll winner after averaging 18 points in two games, including the winning shot against Syracuse. BASEBALL

Lafayette shortstop Daniel Bierce is pounding the ball in his senior camapign. Through 10 games, the Kellam grad collected 22 hits, including eight for extra bases, en route to a .550 average, with 12 runs batted in and an .878 slugging percentage. He was the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Week.

* Three former Salem standouts also are off to strong starts this season. Sophomore catcher Chris Colquhoun hit .426 with four home runs and 17 RBIs through 14 games for Lynchburg. Danny Brion, a freshman DH at Belmont Abbey, batted .350 with four homers and eight RBIs in 13 games. Longwood freshman outfielder Robby Newman hit .333 with 16 RBIs and 3 HRs through 12 games.

* Alliance Christian grad Cory Nelson is batting .344 as a freshman first baseman/designated hitter at Shenandoah. He also earned USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week recognition for a six-inning effort in a win over Penn State-Altoona.

OTHER SPORTS

Long Island freshman sprinter/jumper Jessie Gaines was the Northeast Conference most valuable perfomer, most outstanding track performer and outstanding rookie at the NEC Women's Indoor Championships. The Western Branch product won the 60-meter dash and 60 hurdles, was runner-up in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.

* Ocean Lakes alumnus Mike Redwood was ODAC Golfer of the Week for Bridgewater after his rounds of 73 and 74 earned third place in the Pine Needles Intercollegiate. Randolph-Macon senior Chris Bresnahan, a Great Bridge graduate, shot a 74 to finish second in the rain-shortened Marlin Invitational that his Yellow Jackets won.
