'He's too good to be true'

He came to Waterloo Region to further his basketball career and Nova Scotia's Bryson Johnson is leaving on top.

The St. David student will be honoured as District 8's most valuable player tonight at Monsignor Doyle at the annual all-star tip-off that sees the best from District 8 take on the top high school players from Guelph and its surrounding areas.

The award caps an incredible three-year run for Johnson, one that saw him lead St. David to a local and regional championship this past season, as well as a spot among the top eight in Ontario at the Triple-A level.

"It's great to get the MVP for the school and everyone else," he said.

Johnson left rural Pictou County in Nova Scotia in search of more exposure on the court and chose Waterloo after attending a summer camp with local basketball guru, and St. David coach, Dave Mac Neil. Saying farewell to his home, and mom Peggy, was tough, but the upbeat point guard settled in nicely with the Celtics.

His game flourished in Waterloo Region where he became known for his leadership, court vision and sweet three-point shot.

"He's too good to be true," said Mac Neil. "He's a great person, a great teammate and a coach's dream. He's the hardest worker . . . and he plays with supreme confidence. But off the floor he's not cocky or arrogant."

His profile attracted several scouts from south of the border. Johnson opted for a scholarship at Bucknell University, a Division 1 school in Lewisburg, Pa.

"The school is beautiful," said Johnson, who will study business management. "It's a small school. It actually reminds me of Nova Scotia."

The Bison are coming off a tough year that saw the club finish tied for last in the Patriot League with a record of 4-10. But the team has a rich history on the court. Four years ago, the squad made the NCAA tournament and upset Kansas 64-63 in the first round. A year later, the Bison was ranked among the top 25 teams in the United States.

"I want to help turn the team around," said Johnson. "I think I have a pretty good (shooting) range and that will help. Honestly, every shot I take, I feel like it's going in. I don't want to sound cocky but that's how I feel."

Bucknell coach Dave Paulsen has been texting and calling Johnson throughout the season to get progress reports.

The 18-year-old will likely start his freshman season on the bench, backing up starting guard Darryl Shazier. And he's fine with that role for now, though he eventually wants to be a starter.

"I can't wait to get there and hopefully I can help them get some wins and be involved in March Madness," he said. "My mom said if we make it, that she's coming to watch no matter where we play."

Should that happen, she won't be alone. Coaches, players and friends from his second home in Waterloo Region will also be there cheering him on.
