UCLA's Holiday will test draft waters
Holiday becomes the latest player who hasn't really done much in the college ranks to test the waters, joining Ohio State freshman B.J. Mullens.
"After speaking with my parents and with Coach (Ben) Howland and the coaching staff, I feel that it is in my best interest to test the waters and see where I land in the NBA draft," Holiday said in a statement. "I'm taking this opportunity now so that I can keep my eligibility and keep my options open. I'm not signing with an agent."
Holiday averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists, but NBA executives are concerned because of his inability to do anything extremely well and his lack of production at the college level.
"I really enjoyed my first year at UCLA, being part of such a historic program," Holiday added. "I have a great connection with my coaching staff and love all my teammates, so I couldn't ask for anything more."
The difference between Holiday and Mullens is size. Mullens is 7-foot-1 while Holiday is a 6-foot-2 guard who is caught in-between positions.
"There's no question that Jrue (Holiday) is a first-round NBA Draft pick," Howland said. "He's very excited about his opportunity to be an NBA player and I'm 100 percent behind him and proud of him. We are very happy for both Jrue and his family."
Mullens averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds as a freshman, but has already declared for the draft and signed with an agent.
Holiday will have until June 15 to withdraw from the draft.
