First round: helped to a quick start, then saved the Cardinal with his late scoring. Lottich scored 17 points and hit a big 3-pointer with 49.7 seconds remaining, lifting fourth-seeded to a 77-69 victory over No. 13 San Diego on Thursday in the first round of the South Regional.

Record: 18-12
Coach: Brad Holland
Projection: One round and see you later, Toreros.

The skinny: The program hasn?t made an NCAA appearance since 1987, when Holland was still an assistant coach at his alma mater, .

USD showed what kind of season it was headed for when Holland took his team into Pauley Pavilion to open the season and the Toreros pounded inside.

The guys doing the pounding against the Bruins were the guys who did it against the opposition all season, 6-10 and 6-7 , each of whom is almost unstoppable 1-on-1 down low.

Holland has a trio of guards, , and , who?ve been able to handle the team?s playmaking duties by committee.

Go-to guy: Keep. At 6-10 and 270 pounds and with highly polished low-post skills, who else do you want to throw it to?

Unsung hero: wasn?t recruited heavily out of high school but, as a senior, has developed into one of the better guards in the West.

The Weakest Link: The team?s overall lack of quickness hurt it at times against non-conference opponents.

FOX fact: ?s campus in Malibu gets all of the national publicity but the view of San Diego from USD is about as pretty as you?ll find anywhere.

Famous alum: Alison Armitage
