Markel Brown, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Peabody Magnet School in Alexandria, La., has committed to the Oklahoma State basketball program, according to Brown's coach, Charles Smith. Brown, who averaged 28.5 points and 8.0 rebounds as a junior, is regarded as being among the top class of 2010 prospects in Louisiana.

He was a first-team Class 4A All-State selection and was the central Louisiana MVP last season. ESPN rates him as the nation's 43rd-best shooting guard. "He didn't really have an outstanding summer last summer, so he's been kind of under the radar," Smith said. "He has always shown potential, and this year he is really starting to raise some eyebrows." Smith said Brown was a starter on a state championship team as a freshman and played on teams that won 69 games the past two seasons. Smith said Brown had to be a leader last season because he was the only returning starter on a team that had two freshman starters. "I think he will be a great college basketball player," Smith said, adding that Brown is versatile enough to play point guard, shooting guard or small forward. Smith, a 28-year head coach who won his 700th game last season, said he has coached quite a few players who went on to play college basketball and that Brown is "the most athletic of all those kids I have coached as far as his total game." Commitments are non-binding. The early signing period for basketball is Nov. 11-18. Jimmie Tramel 581-8389 jimmie.tramel@tulsaworld.com SUBHEAD: OSU BASKETBALL
