MEN'S BASKETBALL HONORS 2008-09 SEASON AT POSTSEASON BANQUET

MUNCIE, Ind., May 11 -- Ball State University issued the following news release:

The Ball State men's basketball team wrapped up the 2008-09 season with the annual postseason banquet at Cardinal Hall in the LA Pittenger Student Center. The Cardinals were honored for winning a share of the Mid-American Conference West Division championship as well as individual awards. Freshman forward Jarrod Jones (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) took home his MAC Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention All-MAC honors at the banquet.

Jones averaged 11.2 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per contest. He was also the recipient of The Susan A. Bell Academic Award for his work in the classroom. Senior forward Anthony Newell (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) was named the team's Most Valuable Player despite only playing 13 games before having his season and Ball State career cut short due to a leg injury. Newell, a preseason All-MAC selection, was averaging 15.2 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per contest before his injury and had already earned MAC West Player of the Week honors three times during the non-conference season. Senior guard Brandon Lampley (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) picked up his Honorable Mention All-MAC honor as well as being named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Lampley averaged 10.0 points per game on the season and improved his game to 12.1 points per game in MAC action. Senior guard Rob Giles (Detroit, Mich./Mott CC) was named the Shine Johnson Award winner as the team's sixth man of the year. Giles came on strong in the second half of the season as he averaged 8.6 points per game overall and 11.5 points per game in conference play. Senior guard Laron Frazier (Waukegan, Ill./Highland CC) was the recipient of the team's Coaches' Award. Frazier, one of the team's four captains, averaged 9.3 points per game and posted a career-high 22 points in the Cardinals' MAC Tournament quarterfinal victory over Central Michigan. Susan A.
