BLAKLEY, JOHNSON, LATUNDE NAMED ALL-INDEPENDENT

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., March 18 -- California State University Bakersfield issued the following press release:

Junior forwards Trent Blakley (Alta Loma HS) and Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County CC), along with sophomore guard Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy), each earned honorable mention NCAA Division I All-Independent honors, announced Wednesday. It was the second consecutive season Blakley was tabbed for the award. They were the first collegiate postseason accolades for Johnson and Latunde.

All three Roadrunners enjoyed their best collegiate seasons in 2008-09. Blakley led the way, averaging a team-high 13.4 points per game, the No. 11 mark among Division I independent scorers. He led the team in scoring 21 times, reaching double figures in 21 games. He posted three of CSUB's five 20-plus point games this season. Johnson finished 2008-09 ranked No. 11 among independent players in assists with a 3.1 apg average. He added a nice scoring touch this season, reaching double figures 13 times, including a career-high 23 points against the University of Portland in which he knocked down 7-of-9 from beyond the arc. Latunde established himself as one of the top rebounders among NCAA Division I independent players, finishing No. 4 with a 7.6 rpg average. He reached double figures in rebounding six times-all six in double-double performances. He ended the season averaging 11.0 ppg, including 18 double-figure scoring efforts. Chicago State's David Houlston was named player of the year while South Dakota's Tyler Cain was the pick for defensive player of the year. Jamar Briscoe of North Carolina Central was newcomer of the year and Chicago State's Benjy Taylor picked up the coach of the year award.
