BAKERSFIELD, Calif., April 15 -- California State University Bakersfield issued the following press release:

Returning the bulk of a strong returning core of players, the CSUB men's basketball team looked to add a strong interior presence with one of its few openings this signing period. Mission accomplished for Head Coach Keith Brown and the Roadrunners. Wednesday, Brown announced the signing of Eastern Arizona College power forward Donald Johnson (Antelope Valley HS) to a national letter of intent.

Johnson will be a sophomore at CSUB in 2009-10. At 6-8, 215, Johnson brings the size to make an immediate contribution. His production at Eastern Arizona proves he is capable of contributing in a variety of ways. "As a player, we feel Donald will add more length, athleticism and presence to our frontline because of his ability to run the court, rebound and play above the rim," says Brown. "As a student, Donald will be a welcome addition to our campus who has already proven to be a solid role model in his community. "We place a great value on the guidence and direction Donald recieved from his mother, Michelle Cleamons, as well as EAC Head Coach Maurice Leitzke." Johnson earned All-Arizona Community College Athletic Association honors as a freshman this past season after averaging a double-double wit 12.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while leading the Gila Monsters to the NJCAA Division I, Region I semifinals. He also chipped in 2.3 blocks and 1.4 assists per game while shooting a remarkable 62.7 percent (148-of-236) from the floor. Johnson's success at EAC came as little surprise following a spectacular senior season at Antelope Valley High School in 2008. He earned L.A. Daily News All-Area and All-CIF Southern Section Div. III honors in 2008 when he averaged 15.8 points and 14.6 rebounds per game. He scored in double figures in 22 of 25 games, including seven games of 20 or more points. He also blocked a remarkable 123 shots, good for a 4.9 bpg average. Johnson was a first team All-Golden League selection as a junior as well. He averaged 14.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in 2007, including season highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds. He comes to CSUB with career goals in communications or athletic training. He was an NCAA Division I academic qualifier out of high school. Johnson is CSUB's second men's basketball signing for the 2009-10 season. In the early period, the Roadrunners inked Garces High School swingman Stephon Carter. For more information please contact: Sarabjit Jagirdar, Email:- htsyndication@hindustantimes.com
