Former University of Michigan men's basketball head coach Brian Ellerbe was hired as an assistant coach at George Washington University, head coach Karl Hobbs announced Thursday.

Ellerbe served as U-M's head coach for four seasons (1997-98 through 2000-01), including the first season as interim head coach after replacing Steve Fisher. His record at Michigan was 62-60 overall and 26-38 in the Big Ten. Under Ellerbe, Michigan earned an automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA Tournament and also reached the 2000 National Invitation Tournament. "Brian brings a wealth of experience to our program as a guy who has been a head coach at the highest level," Hobbs said.
