SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Recent Sewanee graduate Jordan Casey has become the 27th recipient of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship in the school's history -- and the third woman and first tennis player so honored. The NCAA began the prestigious program in 1964. "Her academic and athletic accomplishments while at Sewanee were extraordinary, and she joins a class of scholar-athletes that simply represents our very best," athletic director Mark Webb said in a Sewanee release. Already honored as an Academic All-American, Casey graduated with a 4.03 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale while majoring in both Spanish and biology. She was a Rhodes Scholar finalist last year and was a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association national scholar-athlete. She had a 60-18 career singles record and was 39-24 in doubles. She was on three NCAA Division III national tournament teams during her Tigers career and made the 2007 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference all-tournament team. The Charleston, S.C., resident intends to earn a Ph.D. in marine ecology and now is conducting seabird research on Southeast Farallon Island, a national wildlife refuge out from San Francisco. "The Sewanee experience abounds with individual mentorship and team cohesion," Casey said. "It provides an ideal environment for student-athletes."

SOCCER

* SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Former Duke University All-American and professional player Patrick Johnston has been hired as the Sewanee women's soccer head coach. He was the goalkeepers coach for the 2008 Tigers team that won 10 games under Dylan Harrison, who left to take over at NCAA Division I member Nicholls State in his native Louisiana. "I am looking to picking up where Dylan left off," Johnston said. "We have a talented group of young ladies in the program, and they have the raw materials to take it to the next level." The 1986 Duke graduate was All-Atlantic Coast Conference three times and an All-American as a senior. He has coached at Illinois State, James Madison, Barry and UNC Greensboro, among other colleges, and in the A League with the New Orleans Gamblers.

BASKETBALL

* Lee University coach and Chattanooga native Tommy Brown was one of 10 finalists for the men's basketball coaching vacancy at NCAA Division II member West Florida, but he withdrew from consideration Tuesday. "I had some interest when I thought they were going to go to Division I, but I don't know when or even if that's going to happen," said Brown, noting that he was asked to apply. "I was honored to be one of the finalists, but I love coaching at Lee. I love the school and I love the adminstration, and we have a good recruiting class coming in. I hope to be here many years." Tusculum's Jim Boone and former Georgia Southern coach Jeff Price also were among the 10.

BASEBALL

* The Chattanooga Baseball Club ended its 2009 summer season 21-4 by going 4-0 at the Bama Slam in Tuscaloosa this past weekend. Stuart Voges got the pitching win and Chase Brookshire had a three-strikeout final inning for the save in an 11-9 defeat of the Birmingham Strike Zone, when Dillon Coleman, Gabe Herman and Max Aeschlimann each was 2-for-3 and Scott Breckinridge and Brooks Thedford each went 2-for-4. Aeschlimann then struck out 10 batters and Justin Baier was 2-for-3 in a 4-2 win over the Bama Stars. The CBC edged the East Cobb Dynasty 9-8 on a walk-off, bases-loaded Breckinridge triple. Matt Holden was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Herman and Thedford each scored two runs, and Jeremy Bales got the pitching win in relief. Brookshire allowed one earned run in a complete-game 9-3 win Sunday over the Mobile Titans, and Baier and Thedford each was 2-for-2 while Hunter Adkins had three RBIs. Zach Stephens, who had doubled in each of the three previous games, was hit by pitches three times and scored three runs against the Titans. The CBC will be holding tryouts this month for next year's teams, which likely will include 14-, 16- and 17-under groups.

FOOTBALL

* SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Tyner running back Michael Poarch, Marion County quarterback Christopher Martin, Walker Valley defensive back Adian Cook and Tullahoma defensive backs J.D. Crabtree and Taylor Lusk are among the 31 freshman football players Sewanee is expecting for its 2009 season. The recruits represent 12 states and has an average grade point average of 3.45 and an average sat score of 1210, according to Tigers coach Robert Black. "We have a great class coming in," he said. "We have impact players that will be competing for playing time immediately.
