CARSON, Calif., March 3 -- California State University Monterey Bay issued the following news release:

The No. 7 seed Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball won their first CCAA post season game with a 79-73 victory over No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at the Torodome. Last year, the Otters saw their season come to an end in a 56-53 loss to the Toros in the first round of the CCAA Championships at the Otter Sports Center. Senior Steve Monreal led the Otters with 21 points and four assists. Senior Jose Sanchez recorded 18 points, and senior Dante Green added 10 points.

Senior Joe Mitchell pulled down a team-high six rebounds. The Otters strong defense forced a shot clock turnover at 10:02 and then extended their lead to 13-8. The Toros rallied back and tied it at 13-13. Five consecutive 3-pointers put CSUMB up 36-21 and a layup by junior Shaun Williams, who made it down the floor in 5.1 seconds, to gave the Otters a 38-22 lead at intermission. The Otters opened the second half with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Mitchell, 41-22. CSUMB took their largest lead of the game of 24 points on two free throws by Monreal with 13:12 remaining, 52-28. The Toros posted a comeback with an 18-6 run that begun on a 3-pointer by Jonathon Toliver. Sanchez hit a 3-pointer to give the Otters a 67-58 lead with 3:18 remaining. In the last two and half minutes, the Otters went 8-for-10 at the free throw line to secure the victory. "I am so proud of these guys," said Otters head coach Rob Bishop. "I have been telling them for the past two weeks that we have been close and tonight we got over the top. "We played defense in the first half like we have been playing all year. " The Toros were led by senior Michael Hernandez with 22 points and Toliver with 18 points. "Hats off to Dominguez Hills for they had one heck of a comeback," Bishop said. "I am just glad it was not a reversal of the last time we were here." The Otters (15-13) will take on Cal Poly Pomona in the semi-finals of the CCAA Championship on Friday, Mar. 6 at 5:30 p.m. The final four games of the tournament will be hosted by Cal State San Bernardino. For more information please contact: Sarabjit Jagirdar, Email:- htsyndication@hindustantimes.com
