Aubrey Coleman each posted double-doubles to help lead the University of
Houston men's
basketball team to an 85-65 win over
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Coleman led all players with 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Cousin came off the bench to score 14 points with 10 boards. It was the season-high fourth double-double for each player with Coleman recording his in the Cougars' last five games.
Coleman enjoyed an impressive all-around game, connecting on 6-of-10 shots from the field and all 10 attempts from the free throw line. The Houston native also dished out three assists with a steal in 38 minutes. With the win, the Cougars improved to 9-3, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to 6-9 and dropped its third straight game. Rebounding from a tough loss at Mississippi State last weekend, the Cougars connected on 49.2 percent of their shots from the field, while limiting the Islanders to only 33.8 percent. The Cougars' perimeter defense was especially strong, holding TAMUCC to only 14.3 percent from behind the 3-point arc, a low by any Cougar opponent this season. After falling behind 8-5 early on Kevin Palmer's jumper at the 18:17 mark, the Cougars took off on a 9-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to grab the lead for good. Lewis led the way with the first six points, while Calhoun chipped in with the final three. The Islanders pulled to within 23-21 following a pair of free throws from Palmer, but the Cougars used a 7-0 run over the next 3:51 and eventually took a 43-29 lead into the locker room at the break. Junior guard Kelvin Lewis added 20 points with a pair of 3-pointers and topped all players with a career-high six steals, doubling his previous single-game high in the latter category. It was the second time this season that the Cougars enjoyed two 20-point scorers in one game. Junior forward Qa'rraan Calhoun added 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Palmer scored 17 points with seven rebounds to lead the Islanders, while Justin Reynolds added 13 points and seven rebounds. Demond Watt tied for game-high honors with 10 rebounds in the loss.
