BASKETBALL Showcase has a solid Nebraska flavor

KEARNEY, Neb. ? From Arizona to Vermont, Division I schools have the 14th annual Miss Basketball Showcase on their weekend list of recruiting stops.

It?s the jewel of the six tournaments that Doug Koster stages every summer in Kearney, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mankato, Minn, even overshadowing the Mr. Basketball Invitational that started it all for Koster 18 years ago.

?We?ve reached the point where we don?t have to change much from year to year,?? said Koster, of Kearney. ?We average 150 college coaches in a given year and the teams like our community and facilities.??

Play begins today for the 64 teams from 11 states at the University of Nebraska at Kearney?s Health and Sports Center and Kearney Catholic?s new Cope Coliseum.

Ten teams are from Nebraska ? Pinnacle Bank Nebraska All-Stars (two teams), Team Runza, Nebraska Twisterz, Alegent Crusaders, NEN Xtreme (two teams), Nebraska Force, Sarpy County and Kearney Bearcats.

?There?s good players from Nebraska, and Nebraska teams did well at our South Dakota event,?? Koster said.

Two weeks ago, Stacia Robertson of Grand Island and Kate Edwards of Crete led the Twisterz to the championship of Koster?s Dakota Showcase in Sioux Falls.

Nebraska recruit Jordan Hooper of Alliance is playing for Team Runza. Another returning All-Nebraska player, senior Sarah Nelson of Omaha Westside, is with Pinnacle Bank.

The Miss Basketball Showcase, because it falls during a live recruiting period in Division I, must follow several guidelines. There must be designated seating areas for the college coaches. At UNK, the east side of the arena is reserved for them and they must use only one door into the facility.

On Friday, all players are required to attend a half-hour educational session that covers NCAA initial eligibility rules, gambling, sports agents and drug use.

All-day admission is $9 for adults and $5 for students no older than eighth graders. Games are from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday. Games on Sunday begin at 9 a.m. The Kearney Senior All-Star Game is at 7 p.m., followed by the showcase championship.
