AROUND THE STATE

Texas

The Butkus Foundation announced Friday that senior DE/LB Sergio Kindle has been selected as a finalist for the 2009 Butkus Award, honoring the nation's top linebacker.

Kindle would be only the second Longhorn to win the Butkus Award, following LB Derrick Johnson in 2004.

The winner of the 2009 Butkus Award is expected to be announced on or before Dec. 8, 2009.

The award is selected by a 51-person panel made up mostly of scouts, coaches and journalists, and coordinated by Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly. Individual votes remain completely confidential.

AROUND THE NATION

Connecticut

A man who allegedly was with the man charged with killing Connecticut football player Jasper Howard has pleaded not guilty to a conspiracy charge.

Hakim Muhammad, 20, entered the plea Friday in Rockville Superior Court on a charge of conspiracy to commit assault.

Prosecutors say Muhammad and his friend and co-worker, John William Lomax III, 21, were involved in a minor altercation with others outside a university sanctioned dance early Oct. 18.

The suspects allegedly went back to Lomax's car and returned with knives.

Prosecutors say several witnesses identified Lomax as the person who stabbed Howard, 20.

Muhammad's attorney has said that while some witnesses claim his client had something in his hand that looked like a knife, no one has offered evidence that he swung it at any person.

Georgia Tech

Coach Paul Johnson has agreed to a one-year extension of his contract, which now runs through the year 2016.

Johnson initially signed a seven-year contract worth about $11 million before the 2008 season. The school gave him a new seven-year, $17.7 million deal after he led the Yellow Jackets to a surprising nine-win season in his debut.

His second year has been even better, as No. 7 Georgia Tech (10-1) has clinched a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game, and Friday's extension keeps Johnson's contract at the original length.
