At one point Saturday, with Ohio State trailing Ohio and Michigan locked in a death struggle against Miami of Ohio, I thought, "Oh no, is Jim Delaney going to send out a press release questioning the MAC's academic standards?"

Ohio State rallied, Michigan held on, and Delaney — the Big Ten commissioner who took a few shots at the SEC last winter — does not have to defend his league.

At least not yet.

Ohio State visits USC Saturday night, and I cannot remember a big September game that seemed so necessary. Let's face it: if the Buckeyes did not play a top-five team from another conference, then showed up for their third straight BCS title game in January, fans around the nation would have called security. I think we all remember the lesson from the Bible: once is a happening, twice is a coincidence and three times means please, for the love of all things holy, STOP CRASHING THE TITLE GAME.

But if Ohio State wins at USC Saturday, that would shut up a whole lot of people. Winning at USC is the gold standard of this era of college football. It is an achievement nobody can dispute.

You can't say USC is a fraud, because the Trojans play all comers in all places, and they just destroyed Virginia on the road.

You can't say USC might be having a down year, because the Trojans haven't had one of those since 2001.

Playing USC on the road is absolutely perfect for Ohio State except, you know, for the part about playing USC on the road. That could be a problem. Especially with Ohio State star Chris "Beanie" Wells nursing an injury.

If you hate Ohio State, Saturday night appears to be fun on two levels: you get to watch the Buckeyes get killed now, which means you won't have to watch them get killed in January.

If you love Ohio State, you tell yourself this time might be different. The haters laugh at that. But the Buckeye lovers might be right.

We put so much emphasis on championship games in our culture, which I obviously understand: they are how championships are decided, after all. But Jim Tressel's program should not be judged simply by what happened against Florida and LSU the past two Januarys.

Nobody sends more players to the NFL. That's just a fact. Ohio State, year in and year out, has as much talent as anybody.

Do the Buckeyes whip a mediocre conference? Well, I don't think the Big Ten has been as good as the SEC the last three years. But I don't think that talent gap is as big as it seems, either. Since 2000, the average SEC team has produced 30.3 NFL draft picks, including an average of 14 per school in the first three rounds. In that same period, the average Big Ten team has produced 29.4 draft picks, including an average of 11.8 per school in the first three rounds.

Of course, nobody wants to hear that. Just as nobody wants to hear that during the last bowl season, Ohio State played Louisiana State in Louisiana, Illinois played Southern California in Southern California, Michigan played Florida in Florida, and Penn State played Texas A&M in Texas.

And absolutely nobody wants to hear this from Delaney, the Big Ten commissioner:

"I love speed and the SEC has great speed, especially on the defensive line, but there are appropriate balances when mixing academics and athletics. Each school, as well as each conference, simply must do what fits their mission regardless of what a recruiting service recommends — winning our way requires some discipline and restraint with the recruitment process."

Delaney stopped short of calling everybody in the SEC a redneck. Perhaps that part got edited out. But nobody likes a sore loser. And Jim Delaney came off like a sore loser.

That is why Saturday's game is so great. If Ohio State loses to USC, Delaney won't be able to say anything. If Ohio State wins, he won't have to.

Under the table

  • I like Tim Tebow. He is a phenomenal college player, and as I wrote last fall on this site, he has a chance to be the most accomplished college football player ever.

But please don't tell me he is a candidate to be a top-five pick in the NFL Draft, let alone the No. 1 overall pick. That takes a different skill set, and I just don't see it in Tebow. And I suspect that when NFL teams get down to their final evaluations, they won't see it, either.

  • Barack Obama referred to Penn State as the "Nittaly Lions," and I have two questions:

    1. Are there really people out there who will let this influence their vote? I mean, Obama and John McCain agree on just about nothing. Would you have to care about no other issues to let this be the deciding factor?

    2. Seriously, how does Obama mess that up? The guy's brother-in-law is a college basketball coach and he is a big football fan. Baffling.

  • East Carolina 24, No. 8 West Virgina 3: Is this Rich Rodriguez's fault?

  • This week, No. 13 Kansas visits No. 19 South Florida. I have nothing to say about this. I just never imagined typing the words "No. 13 Kansas visits No. 19 South Florida."

I have to agree with Blake. I have been in both Michigan and California. I will never live in California again. California is nice to visit. But not somewhere you want to raise a family for sure. Unless you are a marijuana addict surfer or you are moving to America from another country I don't see a reason to live in Southern California. I hated it. I will go back to visit though.

Come on Blake... lol.... Cali versus Michigan...lived in both...I pick the fires, earthquakes, carjackings....lol... lighten up Blake... no contest ...... Will the Pac 10 lose 3 big ones today?..I think they go 1-2 with the win being Michigan and the losses being Wisco and OSU...

MEDICAL MARIJUANA THE BEACHES WERE # 1.
you seem to forget though.... all those sunny days leave your cities and towns burning to the ground. The earthquakes are horrific and all the pretty girls with fakes breasts and fake personalities inspiring to be actors. Thanks but no-thanks. I'll stay here in michigan and enjoy a nice gentle rain, less fake people and parts and certainly less ass holes than are in your state.

Who gives a flying **** what Ohio State does? The Big Ten doesn't count on OSU to win to validate their existence. Ohio St. needs to do what they need to do to validate themselves... not the rest of their conference or the whole nation for that matter.

    edubb2k7
9/11/2008
10:50 AM (report inappropriate content)

AU,

I agree as an OSU fan I dont like the rivals, but OSU is a public school which recieves money from the state for school funding. With that being said that have to play 2 in state teams every year and there is a list and a schedule which they cannot alter. At least not until 2012 I think. Thats why they have to play the Youngtown stats, the Miami (OH) and the Ohio U's. But they still find a way to put contenders on there scheudle.

I give big props to LSU last year for going to VA TEch, GA vs ASU, Ala vs Clemson, TENN @ UCLA and they played CAL last year. FLA took on MIA but they are not that strong yet. They had a shot with USF but they decline on that. FSU aint been strong in a minute. However for the rest of the SEC they are stepping out and attempting to prove they are the strongest. So much props to the SEC teams that are coming out.
**************

UF did not pass on USF! Where do you come up with this bullsheit? You are absolutely dilusional!

The USF/UF could not materialize because of USF's 4 yr commitment with UCF. The last game between the two was this past weekend. If you knew what you were talking about, you would know that the reason USF did not renew their commitment with UCF was in fact, so they(USF) could schedule Miami & UF... they needed open dates. Look for the posted game dates in the near future.

It amuses me to see the posts of the southerners claiming the current Republican Party to be the party of Lincoln. When the segregationists did not like the way the Democratic Party's civil rights faction was moving, they migrated en mass to the Republicans, who were only too willing to embrace them. When David Duke ran for the Senate in Louisiana a few years back as a member of the KU Klux Klan, he garnered about 60% of the white vote. His campaign manager blamed his loss on the fact that he concentrated on attacking Jews instead of the blacks.

It goes without saying that these people are also very religious.

South Florida will out muscle Kansas in another sleaper this weekend. Two more schools that are of the same calibur as Ohio State.

The Big 10 can only hold on with the likes of the Sun Belt, Big East, ACC etc. they do not belong with the big boys and their best teams are embarassed on a regular basis when confronted by the best of the best. There are very few SEC teams or Pac 10 teams that Ohio State, their best team, can play with without being embarassed. Southern Cal will expose Ohio State to be the slow slew footed team they are and will trounce them badly. This is certainly not one of the better match ups of the season and will be boring to all but Ohio State and Southern Cal fans.

Please - Cut the nonsense about the Big 10's reputation! Some egotistical writer has articles like this every year. One year it's the Big Ten, the next year it's the Big 12, then it's the PAC 10 or the SEC. The Big East still doesn't make the list becuase they haven't really established thier reputation yet. These writers sound like Barack Obama talking about Sarah Palin - or maybe himself!

C'mon - write about something serious!

im just tired of everyone bashing the big ten
osu is a powerhouse mich usally is and penn state is no joke and yes uga fl are great teams so is usc but success is only just recent for fl and uga i hope usc wins there conf every year there the only ones in it and really who wants to play out conf games in late november in ann arbor or columbus its awfully cold up here i think there should be some respect paid to the big ten i want to see florida play osu in the middle of nov on the road and play mich on the road there are tough teams hell florida turned down a joke of team notre dame thats an easy win and being a buckeye im not saying we dont play joke teams ie ohio and take them for granted but were are picking up big out of conf games to prove to everyone were no joke

Look out for the Big East to change the dynamic of the game as well, it has a spread footprint for recruiting and Rutgers is starting to attract some top PA, NY, MD, and Northeastern Talent, the same way Va Tech changed the land scape in those states in the 90's. WV is really taking over the Pitt recruiting territory and Louisville could cut into some of the SEC recruiting base, especailyl among those top athletes who look at football and basketball. SOuth Fl is changing the dynamic in FL, and taking recruits taht used to go to Miami and FL St, and UCF although still small and in a mid conference, is taking some talent in fl as well.

Talent that might have gone to the ACC is finding its way into the Big East.

This is why I think that despite the trends, the Big 12 and Big Ten and even the Pac 10 will always be power conferences, theres such an overlap in territory between the big east, ACC, and SEC where schools recruiting territories overlap. It does make SEC teams dominance right now, more impressive, but the recent surge in the new big east teams should be commended.

I will disagree that in the past the big ten only had one Natl Champ contender. OSU yes, Mich yes, Penn State has been there and had it not been for that questionalbe call in 05, there would have been a bcs mess, Wisconsin only seems to be able to crack the top ten.
But only the past year Mich has been out of it, they met OSU at 1 and 2, in 06.

SEC is the top conf, but the SEC strength is only recent. Auburn had one title caliber year but usually are a top 25 team, UGA had some down years where they were in and out of the top 25 but now are emerging, FLA had a few years as a lower top 25 and then resurged under meyer, LSU has been a pretty consistent force. But the rest of the SEC, Ark had 2 good years, but had been a nonfactor for a while, Tenn has really kind of fallen off like MSU did. KY and Ole miss aren't real power program, like an Mn or Ind. Ill and Alabama both were down, now they are coming up. Vandy is as bad as Northwestern. The landscape is always changing, and through the 90's the Big Ten was the force, then again so was the Big East with Miami and Va Tech. The Pac 10 then was nothing, the Big 12 had Ok and Nebraska who got stomped in title games.

The landscape and game is always evolving, the spread is up and coming and that kind of speed game goes well for the speed in the SEC and some of the Pac 10, but someone will find a way to use smart power def to pressure the QB and the run and the big ten and big 12 will ascend again. It is cyclical.

    Au,

That is more recent. like in this decade recent. Prior to that Auburn nor GA were contenders and the ACC was beating up on the SEC back then. More recently those teams have stepped up.

prior to that in the BIG TEN it was OSU, MICH, PENNST, and Wisc running up the scores in the BIG TEN. TEnn and FLA was doing it big for the SEC, Washington had a team right along with CAL. Texas and OU was the game to watch yet Nebraska was running things. MIA and VT would fight it out for the BIG east and FLA and BC would battle for the ACC. More recently teams such as the Auburns and GA have come out of hididng and are doing things. some teams pick up where other teams fell off. Now at this present time you'll see that there are a tons of teams running for the NC title game but that will start to dissapate starting 9/13/2008 with USC and OSU.

rjk256, you make a great point. In the past in the BIG TEN, there were really only 2 teams that would contend for a NC. (OSU & MICH) Everyone else are decent top 25 teams. Now it's just OSU. In the PAC-10, there's only USC and two or three top 25 teams. Now in the SEC there are 4 teams that could win a NC year in and year out.(Auburn, FLA, UGA, and LSU) And 4 or 5 top 25 teams.
