Texas Tech passes Penn State in BCS standings

One Texas team fell out of the top two in the BCS standings.

Another one took its place.

While Alabama moved up to the top spot in the rankings, the bigger development Sunday was Texas Tech leapfrogging idle Penn State and grabbing — at least for the time being — one of the two spots in the title game.

One day after beating the Longhorns, the Red Raiders jumped all the way from seventh to second in the standings. And they did so thanks to a wide swath of support.

The human voters had Texas Tech No. 3 in both the Harris and USA Today polls, behind just 'Bama and Penn State, but within shouting distance of the Nittany Lions in both.

However, the Red Raiders were No. 1 in three of the six computer polls utilized in the formula and were tied with the Tide for the top spot in that portion of the formula.

While Alabama and Texas Tech occupy the two coveted top spots, both teams still have some work to do to lock up a title shot. Alabama travels to LSU on Saturday and would still have to beat a suddenly resurgent Florida team in the SEC title game.

As for Texas Tech, a home game vs. Oklahoma State and a road date at Oklahoma are both potential stumbling blocks, as is the Big 12 championship game.

Should either stumble, Penn State would seem to be positioned to take their place. The Nittany Lions have just three games remaining on their schedule, only one of which features an opponent in the top 25 in the current BCS standings.

And if both Alabama and Texas Tech should lose? Well, it's a little less certain who'd join Penn State in the title game under that scenario.

It could be Texas, which only dropped to No. 4 in the standings despite suffering its first loss of the season at the hands of Texas Tech.

Or it could be Florida, which jumped from eighth to fifth after dismantling Georgia Saturday.

Oklahoma and USC are sixth and seventh, respectively, but both teams face a similar problem in their bid to reach the title game — neither can win their conference (let alone the national championship) without a little help.

Even if the Sooners run the table, they won't automatically play in the Big 12 championship game unless the Longhorns lose a second game, which seems unlikely given what remains on Texas' schedule (Baylor, at Kansas, Texas A&M) or they finish as the highest-ranked team in the BCS in a three-way tie with Texas Tech and Texas.

Meanwhile, even an 11-1 USC team won't win the Pac-10 unless Oregon State stumbles down the stretch. While that's certainly not impossible, the Trojans would likely end up behind an undefeated Penn State, as well as one-loss SEC and Big 12 champions, in the final BCS standings.

Someone here thinks Ole Miss is a horrible team. Ole Miss would knock your psu richards in the dirt & your QB would end up with another concusion.<br /><br />The road the Gators face is a helluva lot tougher than the road psu is taking. <br /><br />psu should not get any sympathy votes.... play someone for godsake.<br /><br />Go Gators! one game at a time. Strive for an SEC title.

They were only games everyone said Penn State didn't belong in, yet still win. Just wait, watch and learn the hard way. Cuz some of you just have to do it the hard way.

Nope we don't remember Miani, Alabama, Tennesse and Auburn. Because we don't care, it's this year that matters and you have a weaker schedule than some FCS teams.

Everyone talks about how weak Penn State is. We've heard that many times before and come out victorious. Remember Miami.,Alabama, Tennesee and Auburn. We want want we deserve....The shot.

If you read what I said you won't see any defense of the Gators schedule. If, however, the Gators do win out including the SEC championship they will most certainly have taken a much tougher road than PSU has. And if they don't get into the NC it will be because they lost a game at home they should have won so no fan (myself included) should be crying too loudly for not getting an automatic entry just for being in the SEC. My comments were not to puff up the SEC or any other conference but to just point to why there are doubters out there with regard to PSU based on how thin their schedule has been and how down the Big 10 clearly is.

trueg8r,<br />What makes the UF schedule so great this year? I see a good win against UGA. Great game, you guys looked really good. I guess you can count LSU, but they have a terrible defense and an inexperienced QB. After that, so far the schedule is pretty ho hum. I agree the SEC Champ games makes it more difficult, but the bottom line is you have to win all your games (or at least all the games you are supposed to win). UF lost to one of the worst teams in the SEC, so what does that mean? Do we not count it because everyone thinks in a rematch UF would win? Gotta take care of whats in front of you before you go knocking schedules.

The sweatervest was set up for failure the past two years because pollsters were rating them based on the distant past and not on recent history. I have to admit that after the beatdowns by LSU and then USC this season I actually felt sorry for Tressel, the players and OSU fans because it really wasn't their fault that they were so obviously overrated. <br /><br />I just can't for the life of me understand how those who vote for the polls can't see what those of us without an emotional attachment to the Big 10 can see so clearly. And PSU fans, I'm sorry but you have played a thin schedule in a conference that is demonstrably down. Others, like it or not have had harder games week in and week out. And others still, like it or not, will have to put their NC hopes playing one additional game for all the marbles within their own conference -- something you won't have to do. It's not meant to be personal toward you, it's an honest assessment against your conference and how much credibility you should have based on your schedule. All of that said, if you play anyone other than FL in the NC game I hope Joe Pa gets that one last NC.

looking back over some of these blogs...how can a PSU fan come up with east football riegns supreme when they play in the midwest......I really have a problem with a lot of cogerences saying how great they are unless they play a couple good teams from out of their conference....and last for the big ten fans if in the last 20 years you bet against the big ten teams in the bowl games you would have a nice chunk of bucks

PArider - the Sweatervest can't coach a big game? How would anyone from PsU know about coaching in the big game? Let's see, in the last 6 years OSU has made it to 3 out of 6 BCS championship games, and PsU has been to how many? Come on, you know the answer, you can do it......................NADA! ZIP! ZERO! NEGATORY JOE PA!

trueg8r-I'm a PSU alum and you guys are the last team I want to face. Even though I think we have a shot against anyone. The fact of the matter is, the Big 10 has had a number of teams ranked in the top 10/20 in the last decade. Hey, don't blame PSU because The Sweatervest can't coach a big one. Mark Richt is kicking onside kicks needlessly and getting it handed to him in big games. More impressed with Texas at TT vs. PSU/OSU? Please. Gators, scary. Big 12, not so much. No defense, last man with the ball wins. What the heck was #12 doing on the last play? Watching? PSU will be fine if they win out. IF, there's still a lot of football to be played!

lionation<br /><br />"Hicks"? Love the name calling. And jealous? Hardly! Righteously indignant would be more accurate. PSU is the only Big 10 team I can stomach. I liked them before they joined the Big 10. But I'm also trying to be intellectually honest about what their ranking should be given the decline of the Big 10 of late, the performance of the Big 10 champ in the past two NCs, and whether running the table against a weak schedule and winning the Big 10 should automatically trump what some (and I'm not necessarily including FL in this) one loss teams have had to face week to week. I am more impressed with Texas losing at TT after mounting that comeback only to choke in the final second than I am by PSU beating OSU. <br /><br />No doubt in my mind that Joe Pa will perform well in a bowl game. He usually does. It just shouldn't be the NC game this year though.

The SEC is down this year. No doubt about it. UF and Bama are still good, but Auburn is BAD, LSU is no where near the level they were the last few years (should a team that gives up 50+ twice be in the top 25). UGA is not nearly what people expected preseason. UT is terribadawful. Its basically Bama, UF, maybe UGA, then a bunch of mediocre to decent teams and a couple of really bad ones.

Hey Trueg8r, I'm not saying that schedules shouldn't matter. All I know is that if you go undefeated in the Big 10 you will likely be playing in the NC game. That seems to hold true year in and year out. If Penn State wins out they will be going to the NC. The only way that would not happen is if both TT and Alabama win out, which is highly unlikely. Would there be other teams out there of equal or possibly better caliber than PSU? Certainly. But, the system is what it is. Short of Ala and TT winning out, if PSU wins out they are definitely in. <br />I think they will surprise a whole lot of people in the NC game, and may well win it. Even then though, you will still have a bunch of jealous hicks from down south who won't be able to accept the fact the Eastern football reigns supreme.

Michael Wilbon has NEVER been wrong about anything.<br /><br />Schedules SHOULD matter when determining who the best teams are. Yes, schedules are planned out years in advance but in a year where the Big 12 has so much depth, the SEC is 2-3 teams deep, and the PAC 10, Big 10, and ACC are so thin strength of schedule should be a big factor how/where teams are ranked. The past two years OSU has been the cream of the Big 10 crop but what did it prove? Only that they were the best of an otherwise mediocre lot. I know, I know, Penn St is not Ohio State, etc, etc and JoePa has a great record in bowl games, etc, etc. <br /><br />Big 10 fans, answer this honestly, if BYU had run the table this year playing the weak schedule they have how loud would you be screaming if they were ranked #1 or #2? That's exactly what an unblemished Big 10 schedule looks like right now.

With impressive victories over Coastal Carolina, Syracuse and Temple Penn State deserve to be ranked number one.No other team has proven itself against such top notch nationally ranked opposition.

Any of you Penn State haters come to a consensus yet on who the Lions will be playing in the NC game? Let's take a poll:<br />Florida<br />Texas Tech<br />Alabama<br />Texas<br />Oklahoma<br /><br />I can't imagine that their opponent will be a team not listed above. If you do think it will be someone else feel free to submit a write-in candidate. Vote on this thread. We'll tally them up tonight. <br /><br />Next question: Will PSU beat Iowa by more than 30 points or less than 30 points?<br /><br />For those of you who won't have a team in the NC you are welcome to become an associate member of the Penn State Nation.
