It is very brave and quite magnanimous for The Great Weis Hope to throw his offensive coordinator under the bus by publicly announcing his decision to reclaim leadership of the Notre Dame offense with defensive powerhouses Navy and Syracuse on the Irish schedule.

Too often, I waste column inches blasting Charlie Weis, Notre Dame and the lifetime contract awarded to an unproven blowhard. I never take the time to point out the good side of "Pear Bryant."

Well, that changes today.

I cannot deny the courageousness and nobility of Weis embarrassing offensive coordinator Mike Haywood following Notre Dame's 17-0 loss to Boston College over the weekend.

Look, most college coaches of reasonable character and integrity would've stripped Haywood of his control of Notre Dame's offense privately. A low-key, moderate-ego coach would've kept the behind-the-scenes maneuvering behind the scenes.

But Weis has virtually no ego. He is arguably the most ego-less coach working today.

That's why he made it crystal clear to anyone who would listen that he will be responsible for any offensive success the Irish have when they face defensive juggernauts Navy and Syracuse.

The undersized Middies are giving up just 27 points per game to Division I opponents. The 2-7 Orangemen are nearly as stingy, surrendering just 37 points per outing.

As you can see, a week after battling the nation's 10th-best defense (Boston College), it's extremely noble for Weis to alert the media of his plans to fix Notre Dame's offense.

I'm sure the same media members who championed Weis' lifetime contract will once again sing his praises when the Irish show remarkable improvement and climb to 7-4 before getting waxed by USC.

Again, Notre Dame's progress and Pear Bryant's greatness can best be seen by analyzing Washington's failure under Tyrone Willingham. You must remember that Tyrone Willingham's recruiting is what destroyed Notre Dame football, and as long as Tyrone is recruiting — no matter the school — Notre Dame won't be any good.

That has to be the explanation. I realize The Great Weis Hope is in his fourth season and has a roster flush with mature talent he recruited. And I realize that Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski made a point to remind his players that none of them was good enough to be recruited by Pear Bryant. (I must admit I stole the Pear Bryant nickname from an e-mailer.)

You would think that superior talent and the decided schematic advantage that Weis promised upon his coronation as Notre Dame messiah would allow the Irish to at least kick a field goal against Boston College. That's naive thinking. You don't understand the damage being caused in South Bend by Willingham's recruiting in Seattle.

And if you can't understand that, then you surely can't grasp the self-serving motive of Weis retaking over his offense with two weak opponents on the schedule.

It's no secret. I dislike Charlie Weis and despise the free pass he was given by the media when he was handed a huge contract extension for doing less than Willingham.

Weis is a bully and a coward, and his well-timed announcement that he would abandon this "head coach stuff" so he could bail out his offense proves my contentions.

He's planning on the Irish averaging 35 points the next two weeks and selling his impatient fan base on the myth that he's making real progress. He's hoping the media will assist him in selling this lie.

Weis is an average college head coach with horrendous people skills. That's not a good combination. Bobby Knight had poor people skills, a brilliant mind and a superior work ethic. Nick Saban is a football Bobby Knight.

Weis might be a reverse of Pete Carroll, who bombed in the pros and excelled in the collegiate game. Coaching in the NFL is easier. Everyone is on more equal footing. There are fewer variables. You can hire someone else to evaluate talent. College coaches have already developed the talent.

Weis is in over his head coaching the college game.

There are rumors that Notre Dame might pull the plug on The Great Weis Hope if he loses to Navy.

I'll be rooting for Notre Dame this weekend. I want Charlie Weis at Notre Dame as long as I'm a columnist. His failures and the rationalizations offered up by Notre Dame fans are worth two to three columns a year.

Hell, I've written two this month and could easily get a third if Navy pulls an upset. Stay tuned.

Okay, interesting to revisit this in light of the fact that Michael Haywood was hired last week to be the head coach at Miami (Ohio), making him the 6th African-American head coach in the NCAA. Haywood told an interviewer that he and Weis were always on the same page; that he, Haywood, had personal problems related to not one but two deaths in his family this fall; that Charlie Weis was a huge supporter in helping him get the Miami head job; that Charlie Weis takes a lot of unfair criticism; and that Charlie Weis is a great family man. Now, this is the guy that Jason Whitlock said Charlie threw under a bus. Whitlock's columns tell us more about his lack of integrity than about the subjects he writes about.

I think Notre Dame's mistake was hiring black coaches in the first place. For one, they're very unproven (how many black HOF coachers are there) and look at the big programs around the nation. None of them even consider hiring black coaches. Another bad decision by ND. I for one, hope they continue their racist tendencies because that's their only hope for even returning to prominence.... now their label might scare away the black players (they're the good ones you know) and they're giving free money to a black man thinks he's the next tiger woods... ok, so i'm not from the South but pretty convincing eh? TWO black coordinators, one of the highest AA grad rates. end of story. fire Weis, hire Urban (no we're not giving Ty another shot)

Hey Jason- Go figure-I didn't know this article was about race until I read the comments. Weis has a big head, sucks as a coach, lost to Syracuse, has huge advantages to win and is still a loser. I hope ND keeps Weis to showcase to the nation their hypocrisy. Ball State 48-ND 9 in the Kuner Chickpea Bowl!

The NCAA should eliminate the independent division and put all involved in divisonal competition. If anything it would legitamize Notre Dame's program. The better recruits are opting for divisions like the SEC,Big Ten and others. Weiss blamed his OC for the abysmal performance Sat night. He only has himself to blame after his is the HEAD COACH.

Turns out after the funeral, Haywood returned and asked Coach Weiss for permission to interview for the Washington job. Weiss said yes and Haywood has missed a couple more practices. You continue to spread your RACIST hatred around and this time you stuck your big fat foot in your even bigger fat mouth. Why Fox sports hasn't fired you yet is beyond words.

Jason, for your consideration:

Number of African American coordinators Charlie and ND have hired recently: 2

Number Ty Willingham has ever hired: 0

Number of African American coordinators who are currently under consideration for a major coaching position, thus climbing the coaching ladder the way it works in college (position coach - coordinator - head coach): 1 (Mike Haywood)

Charlie isn't perfect, but he's doing far more to promote racial equity in hiring than most others, especially bitter journalists.

880 Comments: And the HATE just keeps on comin'!!!
Well, I'm a little late to the party, but Mondays are busy for everyone but ND HATERS, they always seem to find the time to comment on an ND: Win, Loss, Tie, Bye Week, Off Season, Coaching change, Lack of Coaching Change, New AD, Old AD, Recruiting, Lack of Recruiting, Yada Yada Yada.
You guys kill me! Especially you Anthony. I actually look forward to well thought out constructive criticism, lovingly written with hate it your heart.
Again, no sense in trying to actually discuss this with the haters, they seem to know everything and have all the answers. Just askin', but did any of play any D1 ball, or coach at that level, or any level for that matter? Just askin'.
Has anyone noticed that the majority of ND fans who comment on these sites seem to be rational, forward thinking, grounded individuals with a strong sense of reality. Unfortunately when/if we are at 10+ wins next year, the haters will point out the schedule (determined long before Weis ever arrived), and the bandwagon jumpers who talk smack and give real ND fans a bad name will come out of the woodwork. Oh, well. Keep on hate my friends, it makes it that much sweeter when we win.
GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get a kick out of Notre Dame Fans that continue to compare their program to bad Washington teams in order to feel better. Here is a word of advice. Look up! If you want to get better, start comparing your team to teams that win, or will that be too painful? Whether you want to believe it or not, it is possible to turn a football team around, in less than 4 years. See USC, Alabama, Miami, Ohio State and North Carolina to name a few. But here is the secret?..you need a good coach, and unless you are hiding yours, you don?t have one.

ND`s schedule next year is a joke!!!!

Just enough to keep Charlie around for awhile.

Heck Ohio Dominican would be in the national title hunt with that lame schedule!

Concur w/ Commefierros. CW is only covering the duty while the OC has to attend a family event (as acknowledged by Fox Sports!) As for Ty, the Huskies are doing how well? Admittedly, ND is not where I would like it to be, but the stars are young so the next couple of years look good. And it does give the top smart football players a place to go to get a top 20 education (w/ a grad rate in the upper 90's).

I am a ND fan. I remember days of a giant walked the sidelines of that program. He was a man who had to look up to his players, but was a giant. I do wish for the end of CW's contract with ND. I am tired of watching my team getting beat by programs that are less than the calibur that this program used to be. I do not feel as if CW could lead this team to a national championship against a high school program. As for Ty, I feel that he did have it rough as he was left with players from the days of Bob Davie. He did okay with what was left. Yes, he is a man of integrity, but he was not the coach that this program needed. I believe that he deserved at least one more season, as they gave one to Bob who was less than a success. What most do not understand about ND Football is that it is expected of each coach to not only have winning seasons, not only to win major bowl games, but to win the championship. If you do not, you are sent packing. Hopefully CW will be sent packing soon. Mr. Whitlock, if you do not like CW as a coach, that is fine. If you do not like ND Football, that is fine. If you wish to attack either without presenting all of the facts, then you are wrong, no matter how insightful it may seem on the surface. When you do so, you have a professional obligation to publically retract your statements. It is something that your profession has done since the dawn of the printed press. If you are not a big enough person to do so, then do us all a favor and be an armchair quarterback in the local bars or your home only. This type of reckless journalism has no place in the world.
