Meyer, Holtz could be next candidates for Irish

CHARLIE IN CHARGE?
|
The latest: |
"USC is the team that you have to look at when you look at playing for championships," Weis said after his Fighting Irish squad had completed a whimper of a 38-3 loss to USC. "You have to beat a team like that."
No, Charlie, first you have to beat a team like Syracuse. Or North Carolina.
There already are rumblings that Weis could be out early this week, but the coach was in no mood for reflection after Saturday's thrashing by the Trojans. When asked what he would like his legacy to be at Notre Dame, he responded:
"You obviously don't know me very well, because big-picture questions I don't ever answer without giving some deep thought to it," Weis said. "Right now, it would be premature for me to (answer)."
Deep thought? Try a deep hole, deep like in a cavern that Weis couldn't find his way out of with a floodlight. Deep, as in how far you'd have to dig to find something positive to say about Weis' stewardship of the Irish program.
The Weis experiment has failed. The coach's attempts to wake up the echoes have instead put them into a comatose state. You didn't need to look at the final score to come up with reasons to send Charlie packing. It was the total ineptitude of the offense which couldn't get a first down until the last play of the third quarter that prompted USC fans to shower the Irish with derisive applause and laughter when ND finally managed to move the chains.
They were laughing, but it's no joke.
This once-proud rivalry that ND and USC respect and look forward to each year has become a giant pity party. And at the head of the table sits Weis, befuddled, helpless and soon to be jobless.
The only things the Irish have to look forward to are the rumors and speculation, the breaking news flashes, the press conferences, the excuses and the second guesses. Back in South Bend, a dismal, gray, cold, forbidding winter is settling in. Touchdown Jesus is throwing up his arms not in celebration but in despair. And the faint jingling you hear isn't Santa's sleigh bells, but the collection plate gathering up another pile of dough to toss at the next savior.
So when the smoke finally clears over the Golden Dome, who has the best odds of being the anointed one?
Urban Meyer, Florida 5:2 odds
Why he could be the next coach ...
It wouldn't be a shocker to hear that ND has already reached out to Meyer. Yeah, he turned down the Irish once before, but probably because he got a good look at the roster and decided it wouldn't fit his true love the spread. But now the Irish have Dayne Crist, an outstanding quarterback who is very mobile, very fast and perfect for running Meyer's offense.
There's also the ego factor. Meyer might not be remembered 50 years from now even if he does win his second ring at Florida because Florida isn't as storied a football program as say, Notre Dame. But if he wins a ring or two in South Bend, they'll name a building after him and guarantee him a place in the pantheon of Irish legends.

Why he won't be the next coach ...
Let's be honest. Any coach who takes the job knows he has four years or less to build a dynasty in South Bend. And besides, Meyer's got a good thing going in Gainesville. Why take a risk and go backward?
Skip Holtz, East Carolina 4:1 odds
Why he could be the next coach ...
Skip is a Notre Dame man; he's a legacy, former student, former player and former offensive coordinator for the Fighting Irish. Holtz has brought the East Carolina Pirates up from the bowels of Conference USA to first place in the East division, all in four years. Throw in the warm fuzzies from fans saying "Coach Holtz" once again, and this looks like a great pick.
Why he won't be the next coach ...
Who really wants to take on a sinking ship and be burdened with the legacy of his father, Lou, all at the same time? It's a tough spot, and the expectations could be set too high for Holtz to succeed.
Brian Kelly, Cincinnati 8:1 odds
Why he could be the next coach ...
Kelly has been a college head coach since 1991 and has two national championships (Grand Valley State) on his résumé. He was named Big East Coach of the Year (2007) and in his first full season at Cincinnati, led the Bearcats to their second-ever 10-win season.
Why he won't be the next coach ...
He is in only his second year at Cincinnati, and it's still too early to say that his successes are because of his coaching, not inheriting a very good team. Kelly needs a little more time to prove he can consistently win against BCS conferences with his own players.
Mike Leach, Texas Tech 15:1 odds
Why he could be the next coach ...
Leach's offense is mind-boggling and would bring electricity back to the stagnant state of Notre Dame football. Considered an offensive genius, Leach has never had a losing season at Tech impressive when you coach in the Big 12 South and his contract ends in 2010. Leach also uses the pass-oriented spread, perfect for Dayne Crist.
Why he won't be the next coach ...
Leach is a member of The Church of Latter-Day Saints and that may be just enough to keep him off the short list at a private Catholic university. He also may want to finish his tenure in Lubbock with a national championship before moving on.
Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 25:1 odds
Why he could be the next coach ...
Gruden has roots in South Bend. His dad was an assistant coach at Notre Dame under Dan Devine. Gruden's contract runs out in 2011, so two years left wouldn't empty the Irish coffers too much. He has coached a championship team and runs very intense practices, something the Irish football team sorely needs.
Why he won't be the next coach ...
Gruden has no college football head coaching experience just NFL. Uh oh. The Irish most certainly won't make the same mistake twice. Will they?

Paul Johnson of GT will be on ND's radar.

The Irish are an average team who should join the BIG-10 to at least lend some credibility to a has-been program. Not to mention it would enable the Big-10 to have a conference championship game at last.ROLL TIDE!!!

FOX is already reporting Weis will stay at ND. I will be expecting my check for $400 in the mail Oddsmaker Lisa on those 5-2 odds. You did put me down for $1000 against, right?
Urban Meyer the "favorite" to take the ND job - Whose your favorite to take Santa's place this year? The Easter Bunny?
I am sure he wants to give up that cushy Springtime job for the opportunity to plunge down freezing chimneys in the dead of night in December!!!

It would be great for Notre Dame to join the Big 10 and make good sense, too. It will not happen for two reasons:
1) $$$$-ND wants their own separate TV contract so they can keep all the money to themselves. the greedy baaastards don't care about competition cuz' in the end its all about the benjamins.
Which bring me to
2) Notre Dame wants to set their own cream puff schedule and not be forced to play through a tough and honest conference schedule. Notre Dame built its BCS runs on season where they had two quality wins and nine wins against the likes of Navy and Podunk St. It is much easier to have a one loss season playing only two or three quality teams a year than having to play 5 or six like they would if they were in a top conference. And remember, if ND goes toa BCS bowl they don't have to split the money with a conference-THEY KEEP IT ALL. Which brings us back to:
1) $$$$$

Why is this ignorant bimbo posting a column on this site? How about an article on the odds that your next set of tires will be black?

Here's mine: Les Miles. He has an NC, He's a genius, like Charlie Weis. LSU fans would sure be upset to see him go now ; )

And before you lose your job as an oddsmaker-I've got a G spot at 5-2 against Meyer taking/geting the job this off season. I'll be waiting for my check!

What a joke and sportswriter's hype it isto even THINK that Urban Meyer is going to leave florida to go to Notre Dame! Anyone putting htis type of thing in to an article should b writing for the Star or National Enquirer - not trying to pass themselves off as a serious journalist.
Yes, Meyer is going to pick up and leave a National Championship program he has created in an awesome football state like Florida and go to a cold, isolated town where he is under tremendous pressure to rebuild a beleagured program. Yeah, RIGHT.
Mack is leaving Texas for Stanford, too. Oh, and Phil jackson will be coaching the Knicks in 2010 when LeBron gets there. I hear Tom Coughlin is taking romeo Crennel's place in Cleveland. And yes, The rams are moving back to L.A.!!!
Memo to Lisa Horne - don't just repeat what you read in the Chicago Sun-Times...

As for Top 5 recruiting classes, you can have a Ferrari, but if you don't know how to drive stick what's the point?
doubleyoo12/2/2008 17:22:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Weis was hired because he was an "offensive genius" as a Coordinator for the Patriots. How much of that genius was Weis and how much of the genius was Bellichek's Video Coordinator? It's easier to call successful plays when you know what's coming at you. Steve Young questioned Weis' tenure with the Patriots too. Maybe the ND AD is questioning Weis' true ability without cheating as well.

And even though some character below is a steeler fan....I like your point about Gruden...We need that attitude! We can only hope...maybe in '10 word just broke fat boy is stayin

Urban Meyer would be a fool to leave Florida for ND! The Irish once may have been a 'storied football program' as the author suggests, but that was long ago. Florida, LSU, Texas, USC and Oklahoma are the 'storied football programs' of today! Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Mack Brown, Pete Carroll and/or Bob Stoops would be fools to leave their current jobs for any other, including the NFL. Dont believe me, ask Steve Spurrier how its been going since he left the University of Florida.

Rich Rod from Michigan for coach of the IRISH!!!!!
ohiobuci12/2/2008 15:44:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Urban leave Gator nation???? I think not!!!! If he wins another national title, and I think he will, Florida will have a building and a street named for him. I think he likes the great weather we have, and Florida is a much more superior team that Notre Dame is and will continue to be more superior than Notre Dame. That school's football program is sub par, and will continue to be sub par. Florida will make mince meat of the Irish.
ameehan235712/2/2008 15:34:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
By the way....I think Spurrier would be totally wrong for the Irish. I just noticed those comments and that would be the nail in the coffin for the program for sure.
12/2/2008 15:19:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Great write Lisa...love the presentation. I can agree with Meyer at the top of the list. The funny thing is, I think Gruden would be the best. Why? Because he's young and a great motivator. As laughable as it sounds, a head coach for a college team that looks like a beached whale with multiple rolls of fat isn't going to get production from young players with boy-to-man attitudes. Gruden would command the respect that Weis did not deserve, nor recieve. Gruden is also a take-no-c-r-a-p guy. When you have someone like Gruden, coaching kids rather than paid players can be easier. Therefore, if the Irish were smart, I believe the best man is at the bottom of the list deserving first consideration. What do you think?
12/2/2008 15:17:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Stoops would be the perfect Choice: What else can he do at OU he has not done the past 10 years: already won a National Title in his second year and one game away from another shot, 5 Big 12 Championships, plus the schedule for ND is now much easier than OU. If they throw an "Alabama" Saban contract his way I think he will go
jiura12/2/2008 14:57:00 PM(Report inappropriate content)
Spurrier is a great selection except that he can't golf from November through April in South Bend. He'd never take it.
