Florida quarterback Tim Tebow had surgery on his non-throwing right shoulder yesterday and was expected to be ready for spring practice in April.

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner had surgery in Shands Florida Surgical Center in Gainesville, Fla., to remove a bone spur and hopefully reduce chronic inflammation.

Tebow announced Sunday that he will return for his senior season.

* First-year Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora received a contract extension through 2012 after the Golden Eagles (7-6) ended the season with five straight wins and a 30-27 victory over Troy in the New Orleans Bowl.

* Texas linebacker Sergio Kindle says he will return to the Longhorns for his senior season in 2009.

* Utah defensive end Paul Kruger is entering the 2009 NFL draft. The sophomore had a team-high 7.5 sacks and 61 tackles for the Utes (13-0).

* Former Auburn All-American defensive lineman Tracy Rocker is returning to his alma mater as defensive line coach.

* Former University of Cincinnati receiver Jim Kelly Sr., who set numerous school records and played an integral role in creating the school's Hall of Fame, died. He was 81.

\ Ronaldo, Marta selected as FIFA players of the year

Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA World Player of the Year award to complete a sweep of soccer's top individual honors for 2008.

The Portugal winger led Manchester United to the Premier League and Champions League titles in May. He scored 42 goals in all competitions last season and became the first English Premier League player to win the honor in the award's 18-year history.

Brazil's Marta won the women's award for the third year in a row. She earlier announced she is joining the Los Angeles Sol in the Women's Professional Soccer League.

* The Crew will begin preseason practice Jan. 26 and travel to Florida, England and Texas before opening the season on March 21 in Houston.

The defending MLS Cup champions will train indoors in the SuperKick facility in Lewis Center and then travel to Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 2-17. The Crew will return to Columbus before departing for Liverpool, England, and games against the reserve teams of Liverpool and Everton of the English Premier League in late February.

While in England, the team will be based at the facilities of Everton, where new coach Robert Warzycha played from 1991 1994.

The team will end its preseason travel with a trip to Austin, Texas, March 10-15 and a game against the minor-league Austin Aztex on March 14.

* The Kansas City Wizards re-signed forward Claudio Lopez, allowing the club to remove the designated player tag from the Argentine star.

\ USOC tabs former NFL executive to run its marketing efforts

The U.S. Olympic Committee hired former NFL executive Lisa Baird as its chief marketing officer.

One of her first jobs will be to look for companies to fill holes in the USOC's advertising portfolio. General Motors and Home Depot have let their deals lapse, leaving an approximately $40 million shortfall in the USOC's 2009-2012 budget.

* Former NHL lawyer and Nike executive Adam Helfant was hired to run the Association of Tennis Professionals.

* English golfer Ian Poulter has pulled out of this week's Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in order to undergo corrective eye surgery. \
