LANDERS, STANNARD RECEIVE TOP JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY ANNUAL AWARDS

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 27 -- James Madison University issued the following news release:

Football players Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) and David Stannard (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) received two of the top awards Monday at James Madison University's student-athlete awards banquet at the Festival Conference and Student Center. Landers, a senior quarterback, was named JMU's male athlete of the year, and Stannard, a senior placekicker, was named the university's male scholar-athlete of the year. The presentations were made during festivities that also saw JMU's female athletes of the year and female scholar-athlete of the year named and numerous JMU athletes, teams and coaches recognized for achievements during the last year.

Landers for his play during the 2008 season was named Division I player of the year in Virginia and the offensive player of the year in the Colonial Athletic Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. He was runner-up for national player of the year recognition by The Sports Network and was a leading figure in JMU compiling a 12-2 record, winning the CAA championship with an 8-0 record, achieving the top seeding for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, and reaching the NCAA semifinals. Landers in 2008 rushed for a team-season-record 1,770 yards and 16 touchdowns and passed for 1,534 yards and 21 scores. He set a team season total offense record of 3,304 yards. He completed his JMU career with 3,477 rushing yards, 31 rushing touchdowns, 3,288 passing yards, 35 touchdown passes, and 6,765 yards of total offense. Stannard, who compiled a 3.377 JMU grade-point average in a finance major, led JMU's 2008 team in scoring with 99 points. He hit on 11 of 15 field goal attempts and on a team season-record 66 of 68 conversion kicks. Stannard in two JMU seasons had 190 points, the No. 6 career mark in team history. He had 23 career field goals, 115 career conversion kicks and one career touchdown. JMU's 12-2 record in 2008 gave the Dukes a 49-14 mark during the last five seasons.
