Wimbledon stuck closely to the world rankings in determining the seeding lists for the two-week tournament.
Five-time champion Roger Federer is No. 2, with Andy Murray at No. 3. Murray won his first grass-court title Sunday at Queen's Club.
Among the women, Safina of Russia is followed by Serena Williams and defending champion Venus Williams. The only major change from the rankings is 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova as the No. 24 seed despite being ranked 59th.
More tennis
Top-seeded Elena Dementieva was upset, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (4), by Virginie Razzano at the Eastbourne International in England. Former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo also fell, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (13), to Ekaterina Makarova after she built commanding leads in each set.
College football
Alabama plans to appeal a ruling by the NCAA Committee on Infractions that forced the program to vacate 21 wins. Alabama's football program and 15 other sports were placed on three years of probation after 201 athletes were found to have used their scholarships to get free textbooks for other students.
* Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says he reinstated his son and two other redshirt freshmen who were suspended in April after an alcohol-related incident. Offensive lineman James Ferentz, tight end Zach Derby and fullback Tyler Christensen were arrested and charged with public intoxication April 6.
Pro football
The Broncos released linebacker Boss Bailey, bringing a quick end to the reunion of his brother, Champ, in Denver. Also, Denver signed Pro Bowl center Casey Wiegmann to an extension through 2010. Wiegmann is entering his 14th season.
* A judge says the Philadelphia Eagles owe the city $3 million to finally resolve a long-standing stadium revenue dispute that sparked dueling lawsuits.
* Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf is in custody in Washington on drug and burglary charges out of Texas after being arrested by customs agents as he returned to the United States from Canada.
Hockey
Left winger Quintin Laing signed with the Washington Capitals. Laing signed a one-year contract after playing in only one game with Washington last season. His spleen was torn in his only appearance after being recalled from the AHL's Hershey Bears.
* The Boston Bruins said former Penguins defenseman Andrew Ference had successful surgery to repair an abdominal hernia and a torn groin.
Horse racing
Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra is heading to Belmont Park after all. Co-owner Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Farms announced that his filly will return to the track June 27 in the Mother Goose Stakes, nearly three weeks after Jackson decided to rest his star rather than run her in the Belmont Stakes.
High school
Rich Irr is the new boys' basketball coach at Bishop Canevin High School. Irr coached Oakland Catholic's girls' team from 2003-07, won two WPIAL titles, a PIAA championship and had a 107-18 record.
