NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 20 -- Southern Connecticut State University issued the following news release:

Southern Connecticut State University head football coach Rich Cavanaugh has announced team captains for the upcoming 2009 season - seniors Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.), Martin Manson (Bloomfield, Conn.), Kyle Sandberg (Toms River, N.J.) and Greg Tuba (Monroe, Conn.). Freeman missed three games due to injury in 2008 but still posted impressive numbers. He ranked second in the conference in rushing touchdowns (seven) and fourth in total yards (746) en route to All-Northeast-10 Conference honors for the second straight year. Freeman was named to the league's weekly honor roll twice in 2008. As a sophomore, he earned All-America, All-Region, All-New England, All-ECAC and All-Northeast-10 Conference honors after rushing for a SCSU single-season record 1,906 yards.

On Nov. 2, 2007, he rushed for a NCAA Division II record 418 yards in a win over Bryant. Manson, a three-time All-Northeast-10 honoree and two-time All-ECAC pick, registered 36 tackles from his spot in the secondary along with three interceptions and seven passes defended in 2008. He earned All-Conference and All-ECAC honors for his efforts. As a sophomore, he also took home All-Conference and All-ECAC laurels. As a redshirt freshman in 2006, Manson captured All-Conference accolades. Sandberg led all members of the Owls' secondary with 48 tackles and four interceptions in 2008. He has been a steady contributor in the secondary in each of the past three seasons. Tuba has been a key figure up front on the offensive line for the Owls over the course of the past two seasons. This past year, he helped paved the way for another outstanding season offensively, as the Owls ranked tops in the league in scoring and total offense and were second in both passing yards and rushing yards/game. Southern Connecticut opens the 2009 season on August 28 when it hosts Indiana University (Pa.) at Jess Dow Field. The Owls closed the 2008 season on Nov. 15 with a loss to No. 20 nationally ranked West Chester in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. Southern Connecticut finished the year with an 8-3 record and qualified for the NCAA's for the fourth straight season. For more information please contact: Sarabjit Jagirdar, Email:- htsyndication@hindustantimes.com
