Jay Hood, the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Miami University last season, has been named linebackers coach at Ball State, according to first-year Cardinals head coach Stan Parrish. "Coach Hood has been a very successful defensive coordinator," Parrish says. "His best interview was on the field every time we played Miami University .

They always had an outstanding defense, and in my opinion, that was a great strength of their team. Coach Hood is a good fit under Doug Graber on our defensive staff. We are extremely pleased he is joining us at Ball State. Coach Hood comes from a coaching family and is experienced as an on-field coach and in recruiting." Hood has been an assistant coach at Miami University since 2005. He was the RedHawks defensive line coach in 2005 and 2006, and then was named the school's defensive coordinator in 2007. In 2008, Hood was promoted to associate head coach and defensive coordinator. Under his direction, Miami's defense dominated the Mid-American Conference in 2007. The RedHawks led the league in six different categories, including rushing defense, total defense and scoring defense. Hood helped the RedHawks to the 2005 MAC East Division Co-Championship and the 2007 MAC East Division title. Prior to coming to Oxford, Ohio, Hood was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Fort Hays State in 2004. From 1998-2003, he was an assistant coach at Millikin University and helped the team to a 46-12 mark in his tenure. At Millikin, he was the defensive coordinator from 1999-2003. From 1994-97, Hood was the head coach at Mesa State College , an NCAA Division II program in Grand Junction, Colo. He spent from 1990-93 as an assistant at Fort Hays and the 1988 and 1989 seasons as an assistant at Mesa State. Hood began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green in 1986 and 1987. A 1986 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, Hood was a three-time team captain and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2004. Hood is married to his wife Renee, and is the son of a former head college football coach.
