FIVE OTHERS HEARING THE HYPE
by SCOTT WRIGHT , The Oklahoman
Last year's finish, AP rank: 8-5, No. 14
Highest preseason rank: No. 5, Sporting News
Why all the hype?: Quarterback Jevan Snead, a Texas transfer, is showing why some Longhorn fans thought he should have been starting ahead of Colt McCoy before he left. He'll be in the middle of the Heisman race, and the Rebels could make some noise in the BCS title fight.
CAL
Last year's finish, AP rank: 9-4, NR
Highest preseason rank: No. 9, Phil Steele
Why all the hype?: Because it's good to be Best. Cal running back Jahvid Best will battle the likes of OSU's Kendall Hunter for the title of nation's top running back, and the Bears' strong offensive and defensive lines should keep them in the BCS picture.
GEORGIA TECH
Last year's finish, AP rank: 9-4, No. 22
Highest preseason rank: No. 11, Sporting News
Why all the hype?: Running back Jonathan Dwyer is the reigning ACC Player of the Year in a run-heavy offense, and the Yellow Jackets' defense is anchored by one of the best secondaries around. And most of their tough conference games are at home.
NOTRE DAME
Last year's finish, AP rank: 7-6, NR
Highest preseason rank: No. 7, Phil Steele
Why all the hype?: Steele says the combination of an easier schedule (only four true road games), a third-year starter at QB in Jimmy Clausen and a glut of defensive talent will get coach Charlie Weis back to the levels of college football respectability.
NORTH CAROLINA
Last year's finish, AP rank: 8-5, NR
Highest preseason rank: No. 19, Lindy's, Athlon
Why all the hype: Butch Davis' rebuilding project continues to gain steam. The third-year coach has his QB back, along with tons of speed and experience on defense, which will keep the Tar Heels in the heart of the ACC title race.
