A few weeks ago, Michigan State University football coach Mark Dantonio offered a football scholarship to Chelsea High School running back Nick Hill.

Hill, the 2008 Ann Arbor News Player of the Year and considered one of the top recruits in the state and the nation, had been thinking about that offer almost nonstop.

On Tuesday, "it just hit me, and I said: 'Nick, this is the right decision,' " Hill said. And then about 2:30 p.m., Hill called Dantonio and said he is going to be a Spartan in 2010. Verbal commitments are not binding.

"I wanted to go there because it's a top-notch education and this is a program on the rise," Hill said. "The coaching staff, they're all in it for the right reasons. They're doing the right things. It's a family feeling."

Hill is 5 feet, 7 inches and 175 pounds, but that didn't deter the Spartans from offering him a scholarship. After all, he rushed for 2,090 yards and 24 touchdowns in an injury-plagued season last year and has 4,700 yards for his three-year career.

He is considered one of the prime recruits in the state's class of 2010, and Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 10 all-purpose back in the nation.

Hill is the first player that Chelsea coach Brad Bush has sent to Michigan State and just the second Big Ten player he has produced.

"There were a lot of schools he was considering, but Michigan State, in the end, made the most sense for him," Bush said. "I'm excited for him. In the end, he made a great choice. He's excited about it. It takes the pressure off. He's relieved."

Hill added that he made a decision now so he could focus on football . Practice begins Aug. 10, and the Bulldogs' first game is Aug. 28 against Huron at Eastern Michigan's Rynearson Stadium in the Big Day Prep Showdown.

His verbal commitment is the second in the past week by an area player. Saline High School quarterback Joe Boisture recently rescinded his verbal commitment to Boston College and said he was heading to Michigan State.
