by By TODD HVEEM, CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT , The Houston Chronicle
The Cougars, who have won three district titles and advanced to one state championship game since 2004, defeated arch-rival Second Baptist twice this summer in 7-on-7 football .
Northland quarterback Will Abt was 29-for-34 with no interceptions during the Cougars' 39-26 win over Second Baptist in the two teams' second meeting.
Abt tossed 17 of his 29 completions to slot receivers Hunter Labrada and Joe Barnett.
On defense, Trevor Winne helped Northland Christian stop Second Baptist four times inside Northland's 5-yard-line.
"This was a big win for us because finishing th season in the win column helps out kids mentally through the rest of the summer," said Northland Christian head coach Nate Sanford. "Our guys still have a lot of individual work to do on their own over the next couple months to prepare for the fall."
Northland Christian will open the 2009 football season against Austin St. Stephen's on Friday, Aug. 29.
Area teams to play in state 7-on-7
The Langham Creek Lobos, Cy-Fair Bobcats and Jersey Village Falcons will represent District 15-5A at Friday and Saturday's 7-on-7 state tournament in College Station.
The 64-team tournament will be divided into 16 four-team pools. After Friday's play, the top two from each pool will go into the winners bracket and the bottom two will drop into the losers bracket.
Two 32-team single-elimination tournaments will be held on Saturday to determine the state champion and consolation state champion.
Cy Creek duo sign
Cy Creek outfielder Brandi Virgil and second baseman Tori Sheppard have signed letters-of-intent to play college softball.
Virgil has signed to play for the University of Michigan, while Sheppard has inked to play at Southeastern Louisiana.
The two graduated seniors helped lead Cy Creek to a share of the District 15-5A title.
Former area stars in college
Brothers Ross and Max Jenkins have taken their quarterback skills from the Langham Creek High School to Division I football .
Ross Jenkins, who was 6-2 as a starter during the 2008 season, quarterbacked Louisiana Tech to a victory over Northern Illinois in the Independence Bowl. He passed for 1,155 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games last year.
Max was the backup last year at Army as a true freshman, but is expected to compete against Chip Bowden for the starting job this fall.
