Baylor Team Report

Inside Slant
Baylor will have to wait at least another year for its first bowl appearance since 1994.

The Bears were manhandled 38-3 by Texas A&M, dropping BU to 4-7 heading into this week's season finale against Texas Tech at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

A week after throwing an interception in the end zone on their first drive of the game, the Bears had two more interceptions inside the A&M 10-yard line that sealed the game.

The first came on a flanker pass from Kendall Wright that was picked off with Baylor trailing 14-3 in the second quarter. The Bears threatened again late in the half but quarterback Nick Florence was picked off at the 2 yard-line.

The back-breaker came two plays after Wright's interception when Christine Michael raced 97 yards for a touchdown to put the Aggies up 21-3.

"We wanted our seniors to go out and have the chance to play in a bowl game," coach Art Briles said. "I think they have done everything we have asked them to do since we stepped off the field at Texas Tech last year.

"To do that says a lot about them. I apologize to them for not letting them fulfill that dream. They put a lot of sweat, effort and good attitudes into Baylor football and the university."

Trailing 7-0, Baylor linebacker Logan Lanier blocked a punt that led to Dary Stone's 31-yard field goal that cut the deficit to 7-3. But the Aggies scored 31 unanswered points.

"As a senior, you want to go out leaving your legacy and go to a bowl game," Baylor safety Jordan Lake said. "For the seniors, it's devastating that we can't do that."

Notes and Quotes
--Baylor had a pair of turnovers inside the red zone. "We should have put points on the board. When you get down there, you have to score," coach Art Briles said.

--The Aggies beat Baylor for the ninth straight time at Kyle Field, and the Bears are winless in their last 12 trips to College Station (0-11-1).

--Baylor is guaranteed a losing record for the 14th consecutive season.

--For the seventh straight game, the Bears were held under 100 yards rushing.

GAME BALL GOES TO: LB Joe Pawelek -- The senior led the Bears with nine tackles, including six unassisted stops in his 44th consecutive start. Pawelek can tie Maurice Lane's school-record 45-game streak (2002-05) this week against Texas Tech. Pawelek has seven-plus tackles in 21 of his past 23 games, and he moved into 20th place on the NCAA FBS career tackles list (410).

KEEP AN EYE ON: QB Nick Florence -- The true freshman completed 21 of 31 passes for 177 yards with two interceptions against Texas A&M. Despite the loss, he moved into sixth place on Baylor's single-season completions list with 165. "We didn't finish and we hurt ourselves a lot," he said. "We bounced back and got in the red zone again but didn't do anything with it. I didn't play very well but that's the way it goes. We have to work on finishing and moving the ball well. We had a lot of penalties but we still have to finish."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I don't feel like we're building a program. I feel like we're fighting our tails off to make Baylor football respectable. To me, that's not building; that's doing what you're supposed to do. We want to put a team on the field that represents the university the best we can." -- Baylor coach Art Briles.

Strategy and Personnel
LOOKING GOOD: LB Jason Lamb recorded a sack Saturday, which moved him into ninth place on Baylor's career sacks list with 9.5. Lamb ended up with four tackles on the day. Lamb leads the Bears with eight tackles for loss and four sacks.

STILL NEEDS WORK: Texas A&M freshman Christine Michael scored on a 97-yard run for the longest play from scrimmage in school history, and the Aggies rushed for 287 yards in the first half after breaking several big runs. A&M rushed for a season-high 375 yards against Baylor, which has the Big 12's worst run defense. Michael ran for 116 yards and Cyrus Gray ran for 107, the second time this season both backs have topped 100 yards in a game. The 97-yard TD was the longest running play by an opponent in Baylor history.

ROSTER REPORT:

--IR Kendall Wright has caught at least one pass in each game of his career, a 23-game streak. His 60 receptions this season rank fifth-most in a single season in school history.

--TE Justin Akers has caught at least one pass in 14 consecutive games.

--KR Terrance Williams moved into fifth place on the school's single-season kickoff return yards list with 656 yards.
