STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL 2010 LOOK AHEAD: The Bulls will miss WR Naaman Roosevelt, the school's career receptions leader, and QB Zach Maynard, who transferred to Cal, but they have a deep backfield led by seniors Ike Nduka and Brandon Thermilius. Sophomore Jerry Davis will get the first crack at quarterback. Defensively, the only player missing of note is S Mike Newton. Everyone else returns.
SPRING SNAPSHOT: Practice begins March 14 and ends April 15. The Blue-White scrimmage is scheduled for April 15. For the most part, all jobs are open for competition and everyone is learning a new system. Coach Jeff Quinn, like he did at Cincinnati, will run the spread, which means the Bulls will be playing at a quicker pace. Quinn hasn't decided if the Bulls will play a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense but as it stands, the Bulls are better equipped to remain a 4-3 unit. PRO POTENTIAL: --RB James Starks -- Sat out his entire senior season last year because of a shoulder injury but still finished as the school's career rushing leader. A potential second-round pick prior to his injury, Starks must now prove he can stay healthy. Will compete in the NFL combine. --WR Naaman Roosevelt -- A former high school quarterback, Roosevelt finished as Buffalo's career leader in receiving. He has good hands but isn't a burner, which means he's more of a fourth- or fifth-round pick. Will compete in the NFL combine. --WR Brett Hamlin -- Hamlin isn't fast or flashy, but he's a solid possession receiver. Would be considered a steal in the late rounds. ROSTER REPORT: --With Jeff Quinn planning to install a spread offense, Buffalo signed five receivers. In addition to Devon Hughes and Adam Redden, the Bulls will be bringing in Cordero Dixon from Suwanee, Ga., Cortney Lester from Miramar, Fla., and Aaron Walters from Hopkins, S.C. Walters, a relative of former NBA star Chris Webber, caught 71 passes for 1,200 yards and 19 touchdowns to help his high school team win a state championship. |
