Oregon Team Report
Updated: November 23, 2009, 12:42 AM EST
Inside Slant Football teams rarely actually quit, and nobody expected Oregon to do that when it fell behind 24-14 early in the fourth quarter at Arizona, or when it turned the ball over on downs in its own territory with less than seven minutes left.
But the way the Ducks fought back to win 44-41 in double overtime ... that was uncommon. And that is the stuff that makes champions."Our guys didn't flinch," coach Chip Kelly said. "Backs against the wall, we fought our way out," safety T.J. Ward told the Eugene Register-Guard. "That's just how we play." Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was brilliant down the stretch, and the defense did its part, too. Arizona took over at the Oregon 45 up 31-24 with 6:26 left. But the Ducks kept Arizona out of field-goal range and intercepted a pass in the end zone. Masoli then directed an 80-yard touchdown drive, as Oregon converted third-and-11 and fourth-and-4. Masoli found Ed Dickson on an 8-yard touchdown pass with six seconds left. Oregon scored touchdowns on both possessions in overtime, with Masoli crashing into the end zone from 1 yard out to end the game. Masoli passed for 284 yards and ran for 61 yards, accounting for three touchdowns each way. "That was one of the best performances I've seen in a long time by a quarterback," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said. "We were in a good groove, but the quarterback is such a difference-maker." Because of that, Oregon (9-2, 7-1 Pac-10) will play host to Oregon State on Dec. 3 with the Rose Bowl on the line for both teams. Notes and Quotes --Oregon exorcised some demons at Arizona Stadium. Two years ago, the Ducks were ranked No. 2 nationally, but QB Dennis Dixon went down with an ACL injury, Arizona pulled off the upset and Oregon lost its final three games. Four years ago, starting QB Kellen Clemens down went with an injury in Tucson.
"I just remember the last time here was not pleasant," said TE Ed Dickson, who caught the tying touchdown with six seconds left in regulation Saturday. "By any means necessary, get a win. This is a hostile place to play."--RB LeGarrette Blount, who has been off suspension for two games, did not play against Arizona. His availability has really become a non-issue. LaMichael James was again terrific as the starter, carrying 19 times for 117 yards against Arizona. He has eight 100-yard efforts in the past nine games, failing to reach triple digits only against Washington State because of a lack of carries in an Oregon rout. GAME BALL GOES TO: QB Jeremiah Masoli -- This performance might put him over the top in the race to be the All-Pac-10 quarterback. Masoli proved to be a dangerous passing threat in the read-option offense, completing 26 of 47 throws for 284 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran 16 times for 61 yards and three touchdowns against Arizona. Basically, he made every play down the stretch that needed to be made. KEEP AN EYE ON: CB Cliff Harris -- The true freshman made his second consecutive start and was tested often by Arizona. He was beaten for a touchdown when WR Juron Criner went up over him, but Harris mostly held his own, finishing with six tackles and one pass breakup. His emergence has been big in a secondary hit hard by injuries. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're fortunate that we're at home. It's an unbelievable experience for us to be at Autzen. It should be a great game." -- Oregon coach Chip Kelly, in the Eugene Register-Guard, on playing Oregon State next week in the Civil War, with the winner going to the Rose Bowl. Strategy and Personnel LOOKING GOOD: WR Jeff Maehl has been kind of a one-man band in the receiving corps this season. Much of the focus of the offense is on the quarterback, the running backs and TE Ed Dickson. But Maehl was absolutely huge against Arizona, as he came up with a career game -- 12 receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. He made a spectacular diving catch in the end zone on a third-down play on the first possession of the first overtime. Having to settle for a field goal there would have been a major blow.
STILL NEEDS WORK: Special teams were a bit shaky against Arizona but were ultimately good enough. The key play was Morgan Flint's 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that hit the crossbar but managed to crawl over for three points. Coach Chip Kelly said afterward that 43 yards is the edge of Flint's distance. Earlier, Jackson Rice shanked a 14-yard punt that led to a short Arizona field-goal attempt (which missed). And the Ducks avoided complete special teams disaster when holder Nate Costa dug out a low snap to make the placement on the game-tying extra point with six seconds left.ROSTER REPORT: --LB Bryson Littlejohn, valuable on special teams, was not on the trip to Arizona because of an ankle injury. --Senior CB Willie Glasper is out for the season because of a non-contact knee injury suffered in practice Oct. 6. --Senior CB Walter Thurmond III is out for the season because of a knee injury suffered in September. |
