Kansas came into the season as the No. 1 team in the nation, expected to challenge for the national title.

 

Despite the lofty No. 1 seed and a 33-2 record, Kansas couldn't stop Northern Iowa in the second round of the NCAA tournament, losing to the ninth-seeded Panthers 69-67 in the biggest upset of the Big Dance.

The Jayhawks won their first 14 games of the year, went 15-1 in conference play and won their sixth straight Big 12 title. Things were looking great for Rock Chalk going into the NCAA Tourney as the No. 1 seed.

Kentucky's John Wall came into the season as one of the most hyped freshman in years, and the hype was well deserved. Wall led a group of five Wildcat freshmen to 19 straight wins to open the season and an amazing 35-3 record. Unfortunately, their FInal Four bid came up short, thanks to a loss to No. 2 seed West Virginia in the Elite Eight.

The national Player of the Year, Evan Turner, was the leader of an Ohio State team that surprised many people by going 29-8, winning the Big Ten title and advancing to the Sweet 16 before losing a tough game to Tennessee.

Mighty Georgetown, seeded third and considered by many as a legitimate threat to reach the regional final, wassent home by an Ohio team that could finish no better than 7-9 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats shot 13 of 23 beyond the arc to bounce the Hoyas and All-American Greg Monroe out in the first round.

Yes, folks, that's Isaiah Thomas. OK, not the Isiah Thomas we all know from a Hall of Fame career with the Pistons, but he's the modern day Isaiah. The extra 'A' in his name will be the grade we give him and his Washington Huskies, as he's turning them into a team to be reckoned with yet again.

Jordan Crawford started the season with a ton of publicity after throwing one down in LeBron's face during a summer scrimmage caught on video. He then led his Musketeers to the best record in the Atlantic 10, an overall record of 26-9 and a trip to the Sweet 16 where they were finally taken down by Kansas State in double overtime.

BYU junior Jimmer Fredette scored a tourney-high 37 points to help the seventh-seeded Cougars fight off No. 10 Florida in double overtime in one of the first games of the tournament. The team's season would end one game later, but not before Fredette was able to put up two games of 45 or more points, including one in the Mountain West tournament against TCU.

With easily the best jacket of the tournament, New Mexico head coach Steve Alford clearly was making a point for his New Mexico Lobos to stick out from the crowd. Getting to the second round of the Big Dance behind powerful center Derrick Caracter did just that.

Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith argues a call with a referee as his son and assistant coach Saul holds him back. The Golden Gophers would make an amazing late-season run to the Big Ten championship game, which earned them a trip to the NCAA Tourney. Unfortunately, they ran into a hot Xavier team in the first round and exited quietly.

Old Dominion's faithful followers get all dressed up for the first round, where they went against Notre Dame and took 'em down in a thriller. The Colonial champs finished the season 27-9 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tourney before being taken out by Baylor.

San Diego State's Billy White falls into the throng of photographers during their first-round game against Tennessee. The surprise Mountain West champs squeaked into the Big Dance thanks to wins in nine of their last 10 games of the year, then held their own against the Volunteers before falling 62-59.

The first memorable moment of the NCAA Tournament was provided by Murray State forward Danero Thomas, who hit this fadeaway 16-footer as time expired to give 13th-seeded Murray State a stunning first-round victory over fourth-seeded Vanderbilt. It was a bitterly familiar finish for Vandy, which was upset as the fourth seed by Siena in 2008.

Purdue wasn't supposed to do much in the tournament after losing superstar Robbie Hummel to injury, but Chris Kramer made sure his fourth-seeded Boilermakers made the Sweet 16. His basket with 4.2 seconds to go gave Purdue a win over No. 5 seed Texas A&M in overtime to adavnce past the second round.

Saint Mary's finally made their mark in 2010, getting past Gonzaga to take the West Coast Conference crown, then winning not one, but two NCAA Tourney games. Here, they celebrate their 75-68 win over highly-ranked Villanova in the second round. Omar Samhan (not pictured) was the breakout star of the tourney, averaging 25.3 points and 9.3 rebounds over the team's three games.

The early season dismissal of star Tyler Smith was supposed to ruin the Vols’ season, but they reached a high point against the Buckeyes in the Sweet 16. J.P. Prince blocked Ohio State phenom Evan Turner’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer to send Tennessee to the Elite Eight.

Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl isn't crying here, but he had plenty of reasons - both good and bad - throughout the 2010 season. He lost several top players to disciplinary reasons early in the year, they took the remaining players on an amazing NCAA Tourney run, then finally pleaded guilty of misleading NCAA investigators looking at misgivings in the program. All in all, a crazy year so far for the Vols.

The short-handed Volunteers had an impressive season on the court, going 28-9 and coming within one point of making it to the FInal Four, losing to Michigan State in the last seconds of play in the Midwest Regional final.

The Spartans were easily the most nail-biting team of this year's NCAA Tourney. A Raymar Morgan free throw with less than two seconds to play gave Michigan State a one-point lead and the Vols’ prayer at the buzzer fell well short, sending coach Tom Izzo’s crew back to the Final Four. Amazingly, four of the five games the Spartans played in the tournament were been decided by three points or less. They finally were ousted 52-50 by upstart Butler in the Final Four.

Fans of West Virginia come out in full KISS regalia before their Final Four matchup against the Duke Blue Devils in Indianapolis.

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins consoles star player Da'Sean Butler after he blew out his knee in the second half against Duke in the Final Four. Butler, a National Player of the Year finalist, wouldn't see a basketball court again until playing in the Lakers' summer league.

Butler players run on the court after upsetting yet another team in the 2010 NCAA Tourney. This one was the biggest of them all, a 52-50 win over Michigan State to advance to the national championship game against Duke.

Was there anything Butler could not do in 2010? The Horizon League champs got to play in their first-ever Final Four in their own hometown of Indianapolis, then made it to the title game, only to lose to the legendary Duke Blue Devils after Gordon Hayward's half-court game-winning attempt hit off the iron. In the process, they shcoked the world and gave us all a wonderful David vs. Goliath game we never thought would be as good as it was.

The Duke fans made their way to Indianapolis en masse, and the team used every bit of energy they created in their two Final Four matchups against West Virginia and Butler.

Butler's Matt Howard crushes Duke forward Lance Thomas early in the national title game. Howard would pick up two quick fouls, which hurt the Bulldogs early in the game. They made a gerat recovery, but there may have been just a bit too much ground to make up.

Duke's player lift the 2010 national champion trophy, the school's fourth overall. It wrapped up what was a tremendous year of college basketball. The Blue Devils now enter the 2010-11 season as the No. 1 team in the country and look to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since Florida in 2006 and 2007.
