Matt Painter's team had a legitimate shot at reaching Indianapolis for the Final Four until Robbie Hummel suffered a season-ending knee injury in Feburary. Now, Purdue looks like one of the most vulnerable teams in the NCAA tournament, and a veteran Siena squad that has won first-round games in the Big Dance the past two years will be waiting to pull the upset once again. If the Saints come up short, a tough and tested Texas A&M group could be waiting to meet the Boilermakers in the second round. — Josh Herwitt

But Travis Ford's ballclub relies heavily on James Anderson to carry the offense, with the junior averaging 22.6 of the team's 74.3 points per game. That could be a problem if Iman Shumpert and an athletic Georgia Tech can lock down Anderson in their first-round matchup on Friday. If the Yellow Jackets can't do the job, Player of the Year favorite Evan Turner and a streaking Ohio State team will likely be waiting for the Cowboys in the second round. But that was in December. Texas has since free-falled since earning the No. 1 ranking in the polls back in January and stumbled into the NCAA tournament as a No. 8 seed. Now, Rick Barnes and company will go up against Wake Forest in the first round and could face the almighty Kentucky two days later in the second round should they knock off the Demon Deacons in New Orleans. That lack of competition in conference play could hurt Brad Stevens' outfit come tourney time, which starts Thursday in San Jose against a dangerous No. 12 seed in UTEP. The Miners hadn't suffered a loss in 17 games until last week's setback to Houston in the Conference USA tournament title game. And should Butler advance to the second round of the Big Dance, it could be facing a more athletic Vanderbilt team.

Now, after being blown out by Kentucky in the SEC tournament semifinals, Bruce Pearl's team will have to travel to Providence to face No. 11 seed San Diego State, a scrappy team that has won five straight coming into this week's first-round matchup. If Tennessee can get past the Aztecs, a meeting with No. 3 seed Georgetown could loom with a Sweet 16 appearance on the line. Gonzaga will first have to get past ninth-seeded Florida State and big man Solomon Alabi, which won't be an easy task for Mark Few's players. And if the Bulldogs are able to drop FSU, a likely meeting with top seed Syracuse in Buffalo — less than three hours away from the Orange's campus — could mean even more trouble for Few and company. Georgetown does come into the NCAA tournament on a high note, winning three games in the Big East tournament before falling by two to West Virginia in the title game, but the Hoyas won' t have any easy time in a Midwest region that features No. 1 overall seed Kansas. The seventh-seeded Tigers head into their first-round game against No. 10 seed Missouri with a two-game losing streak in tact, losing a bad one last week to ACC also-ran N.C.
